So there is a sale on the Nintendo eShop right now and I'm really interested in 3 games. I have heard they're really short though so I'd love some input on whether or not they're worth the money..

Gris ($8.39)
This game looks very pretty, but it's apparently a short game. I remember it was popular for a bit, so I'm worried it'll disappoint me by not living up to what people have said about it. I suppose the price is cheap enough to risk the disappointment, but I'd still like some outside opinions.

Roki ($15.59)
I absolutely ADORE the art style in this game. It's definitely right up my alley. However, it's also a very short game apparently, and the price is a little less forgiving if I end up not liking it in the end. I just want to know if it's got something special about it that will make it worth it. Some unique or clever gameplay maybe?

Raji: An Ancient Epic ($24.36)
On top of this being absolutely gorgeous, it also is very rare to see games based on Indian mythology. I'd love to show support to it if it encourages devs to continue showcasing different cultures! However, not only is it also a short game, I've also read reports of it having performance issues. And I would not be able to feel good about it if I spent $25 on it and ended up with a very short and buggy game. It would have to be an absolutely amazing experience for me to be able to justify that price for a 5 hour game. So please tell me your thoughts.

Also, please no spoilers for any of these games! Thank you!

I paid full price (I think $25? Canadian $25 tho) for Röki and I honestly adored it.

It’s largely a puzzle based adventure game, I don’t think any of the mechanics will blow you away (nothing in particular sticks out to me?) but I found the story really heartwarming and it to be relaxing to play. It’s a beautiful game to explore, it’s definitely charming with it’s story, it’s like you’re playing through a snowy fairy tail imo, and I don’t regret paying full price for it.

I believe @RedPanda also played Röki? But I might be mistaken! I just thought I’d tag them since (if it is them haha) they’ve played it more recently than me and might be more helpful 🥰

I played Gris. I bought it for the visuals, and I remember liking it. I never finished it, though. I did what I often do, which is become distracted by a dozen other games and allow it to fall to the wayside. So, I cannot attest to how long (or short) it might be. But...it's my opinion that, short or not, a good piece of art is worth whatever you are willing to pay for it. You said it currently costs $8.39? Well...I've paid more than that for a single comic book in the past. So, that's how I'd look at it. Compare it to a comic or a manga, or some other work of art. Is that price worth it to you? People will pay $15 for a ticket to a movie that will entertain them for a mere 2 hours...but those same people often complain about short games costing as much. The concept has always amused me. If the art makes you feel something, then you will have gained something from the experience. I hope this helps with your decision.

@UglyMonsterFace and @-Lumi- yes I recently played the game and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I definitely think it was worth the purchase largely for the story and concept overall, which are both very strong. The illustration style is simple, but the scenes they create are captivating. Though the puzzles aren't extremely difficult, I actually liked that. Many adventure games have really stupid things in them like "give the refrigerator repairman a comb so he tells you about his grandmother and gives you a key" and weird stuff like that which annoys me because you would never figure that out without mind-numbing trial and error. Roki does a much better job than any other adventure game. The puzzles make sense for the story and don't interrupt the gameplay too much, for the greater part. But my favorite part of all of it is the way that they knit the overarching themes together in a very lyrical way. I don't want to spoil it for you, but if you play the game you will see clear parrallels going on and it's nicely done.

I wrote an email to the developer asking them a question about the story and they immediately wrote back and gave me some really cool backstory, which is super sweet! They're a very small company, so if you like supporting indie game developers then I recommend very much.

I did end up buying Gris ^_^ Normally, I wouldn't complain about the price. It's not really a complaint but more of me having to be selective with what I spend my money on. Covid pretty much took away much of my earnings (only earning about 30% of what I used to) so I have to really pick and choose what I can justify spending on myself for. I'd feel more guilty about spending on something I didn't end up enjoying or felt wasn't enough gameplay when that money could have been better spent on something else. That's just a product of the world events unfortunately :(

But yes, when you put it that way, it does come off as a head scratcher lol. I had never really thought of it that way!

Wow, thank you for the thoughtful response. And I'm glad to hear that little story about the devs. I really love when creators interact with their fans. It makes it feel so much more personal ^_^ I can't wait to play it!

I got Röki as a gift from a friend, and I definitely love the art and story about it. Only minus is that's it's pretty easy getting stuck cause it doesn't really make it obvious what to do and stuff, suppose that's google for you but yes I recommend!
