Hey guys!

So my name is Whitney, but I've been trying to find a cute nickname I can use instead. Something for friends to call me or something cute to name my mayor that relates to my name in some way. I'm trying to stay away from the obvious and not super pretty or cute "Whit".

Some suggestions I've received so far:

Nia, based off of the "ney" sound at the end). Could you see this working for Whitney? What do you think of the name in general?

I also have a friend who has always called me "Whittle Kittles" as a super silly cutesy nickname. That's obviously too long, so he was thinking "Khit" (or Kit) but I think that would be a little confusing. Like, "Hi, my names Whitney, but I go by Kit". I don't think anyone but my friend and I would see the obscure connection.

I would definitely love some more suggestions if anyone has some!

I like the sound of Nia, but you should absolutely go with what sounds better to you :)

Thank you. I like the sound of it too. It reminds me of Mia, which I love. I'm just worried about it making sense coming from Whitney. I think it works though.

honestly i've always been of the opinion that a nickname should be something given to you, and that picking one out yourself kind of defeats the purpose.

that being said whit makes the most sense, "nia" adds an "a" that isn't there and khit does the same with a "k".

Well, going by "cute" out of these options, Nia is definitely the cutest name. I guess you could also go by Nee? You can even put an accent mark over one of the Es to make it look more "fancy"

I think Khit sounds more androgynous and kind of funny.

Whit would be the least confusing, but originally I thought of "Wit" and thought it sounded nerdy LOL I didn't see your actual name was Whitney at first, sorry !! But also what if someone's trying to be rude and calls you NitWhit?xD

You should go with whatever you want, ultimately names don't matter or how you acquired them (though I agree nicknames are generally given to you), as long as you're happy with it !

I really like Nia! I think it's super cute! Whitney is a beautiful name, by the way!

Don't worry, I have definitely heard all the dimwit, nitwit jokes so you're not the first to think of it, lol. One of the reasons I don't like my name. Not to mention what happens if you replace the W with an S -___-

I would normally agree that nicknames are chosen for you, but since I don't love my name or the obvious nickname for it, I was hoping to find a way to make it a little more bearable.

Oh, god, people are cruel.
At any rate, Nia is certainly adorable !! And I don't think there's anything awful people could make of it.

Thank you! I don't hate my name on other people, but I just don't feel like it suits me for some reason. It gives me popular girl, 80s cheerleader vibes. In school I was the shy quiet girl who would rather be reading alone at lunch.

I actually think the name suits Whitney the wolf in AC really well too and she's one of my favorites. Maybe if my name makes me uncomfortable I just need to work on my social anxiety and try to give off a more confident "Whitney vibe" lol.

I trust you're Whitty enough to go with whatever you feel suits you best. ;)

I'm not even joking, I read your comment before looking at who posted it and then was like... That sounds like a Mello comment!

I kinda agree with gyro that nicknames are usually picked by other people, but I guess if you specify what you would like to be called then that's fine too.

I think I kinda like something like Winnie, or Whit as it makes the most sense to me :)

To be fair no one was giving me unpleasant nicknames out of cruelty. As kids we were all trying to think of goofy nicknames for each other. Brandi became Brand-o and my friend Stephanie who's last name was longish and started with a B, became Step on my Blender, for some reason. Kids are weird, lol. But anyway, when it came to me, no one could think of anything other than the unpleasant ones mentioned above. They thought it was pretty hilarious though.

I feel special~

I agree with gyro as well, nicknames are usually earned by friends.

But as for suggestions, maybe somethin like your middle name or initials. I've known plenty of people who go by their middle name, a version of it or even last name because their first name was so common. It's really not unheard of to go by a middle name (atleast in my experience) with a common or hard to pronounce first name.

Pretty much this. I have two 'acquaintances', one that decided his nickname is going to be Thor, the other Lazerous, and they're both so insistent in it. I decided they're both called 'moron'.

That being said, technically she is asking people here to give her a nickname, so I've compiled a short list of nicknames I feel would be suitable:
- Sargent Slaughter
- Xakxize the Omnipresent
- Pooperino
- Klondiaxous, destroyer of worlds
- Terry Wogan

I don't like 'Whit', to me, it just sounds odd--I rather just be called 'Whitney,' (if my name was Whitney), but I don't like to protest either. I'll let people nickname me whatever they feel is best and just go with it. :)

Nia sounds really cute, but you wouldn't think it's short for Whtney, so it doesn't make sense--same with 'Khit'. Then again, nicknames don't make much sense to begin with. I've seen people called Robert nicknamed to Bob and I never thought that made sense either.

I actually veru much enjoy Whit!
But if you want to avoid it at all costs, Nia is super cute too!

Nia is a very cute nickname to go with. I like it much better than Whit to be honest. Also, I agree with others, nicknames are usually given by friends or family. My parents call me Boo as my nickname and they've used that for years. Has your parents given you a nickname at all? If so, you should probably use that. :)

For everyone who's saying nicknames are given by friends and not chosen. I do agree under normal circumstances. But I mentioned to my best friend that I'm not crazy about Whit or Whitney and she started helping me brainstorm. She's the one that first thought of Nia. Whitney is just a hard name to work with. For example, with Katherine you can have nicknames like...Kat, Cathy, Katie, Kitty, Kate, etc.

The same friend that thought of Nia has just suggested Willa. My dads name was William and he passed away when I was young. I do like the idea of honoring his name, especially because I'll be losing his last name when I get married.

Most people call me Whitney, but sometimes friends, family, or work colleagues do shorten it to Whit. It's just hard when you don't really like your name and it doesn't feel like "you".
