Hi All,

I am truly hoping someone can help as this situation is driving me nuts.

I finally finished both my separate animal crossing islands on 2 different switches and excitedly went into the eshop last night via my primary switch to purchase Happy home paradise DLC to get started and this downloaded fine on my primary switch and I got the call from Nook and the meeting with Lottie at the airport so everything ok, then after a lot of faffing with my second switch I also got the call from Nook and the airport visit so I thought great maybe I don't have to buy this twice as I originally thought I might have to lol however now I find can no longer play both my animal crossing games at the same time when both switches are open/turned and in game like I did before? I get an error code on whichever switch is idle and I try to open play which I found was to do with the DLC only being allowed to be played on one switch at a time which has totally screwed up my local online play where I share stuff between each island. Can anyone help me with this as I already paid for family play subscription ages ago so I could play 2 separate islands on 2 switches at the same time for local play and have no idea what to do now..

I am also wondering if i delete the dlc somehow from my non primary switch will that solve the local play issue between switches and i would be able to play with both switches game open again at the same time?

Do you own 2 copies of the base game? Not being able to run content purchased on the E-Shop on 2 Switches at the same time is working as Nintendo intended.

Hi JKDOS

Thanks for responding and yes I have 2 separate physical copies of ACNH one on each of my 2 switches.. I also spoke to Nintendo chat who appeared to be unable to help and I even offered to buy a second copy of the DLC for my second switch but again cs did not appear to have any useful info in this matter and fobbed me off.

A second copy will likely be need if you want to use the DLC at the same time.

IIRC: Nintendo has what I think is called primary and secondary Switches.

+ Your primary Switch, and every profile on it has access to downloaded content, even without internet.

+ The secondary Switch must be connected to the internet, and only the owner's profile has access to it.

Based on this premise, it may be possible to run the game on both if you enable airplane mode on the primary Switch while using the software.

Thank you JKDOS

I offered to purchase the DLC again for my second switch when speaking to Nintendo cs and they told me I couldn't seems I need to go back there and clarify. Why do things with this game seem so difficult sometimes lol Next time I switch off I will try airplane mode and see if that makes any differ but I just hope I can somehow get back to local play because I constantly swap stuff from one island to another.

Do you Switches share the same, primary NNID? If so, that's the problem.

All 3 of mine share the same primary NNID and I can't play them all at the same time if they have the DLC on them. Switch A & C have the DLC on them, so I use Switch B as a middle ground to transfer the items and use local play.

however now I find can no longer play both my animal crossing games at the same time when both switches are open/turned and in game like I did before? I also have two physical copies of New Horizons, one on a Switch and one on a Switch Lite. I haven't even purchased HHP and I am having this problem, also. I don't remember what I was searching for in the eshop a month or two ago, but I inadvertently clicked on "downloadable content" at one point. I was more than dismayed when my game on my Switch Lite gave me error code 2819-0003 and wouldn't open my game.

After being on the phone for 2 1/2 hours with Nintendo customer service, the agent and I partially figured out that it was because I was trying to play both games at the same time (to transfer items as I have always been able to do (as you have) before this happened.) My Switch Lite island had not disappeared (WHEW!) I kept telling him, though, that I had always previously been able to play them both together. He was super nice but not super helpful and after that amount of time I was fairly worn out, so let him go.

It gets even more mysterious. I went into my account information again and read through bunches of "how to' articles. The problem does have to do with one switch being designated as the "primary console." Whichever console you first open eshop with gets primary console designation automatically. It can be deactivated. Which I did. I also connected to the internet on my Switch (not Lite) to check software status. I take lots of notes when I am doing things like this, but apparently not detailed enough. (I'm looking at them right now.) Somehow the problem was solved! I was able to open both games at once and transfer items. That was on June 30th. And now I can't. I don't know why...

Now that you have posted this, I am going to resume pursuing this. I just couldn't get myself to get back on the phone with Nintendo or try to figure it out myself. Plus real life just always seems to want to interfere with my gaming. 🤦‍♀️

Sooo, I'll be back! Please let us know if you get it resolved! And how!

Why do things with this game seem so difficult sometimes
You notice I left off the LOL?

Hi Stella-Io

Kudos to you for having 3 switches and AC games just to get by and be able to play your own way.. I am less than a year into playing with 2 switches and the game itself so I am still finding some things problematic (and silly) to resolve but when I bought the family subscription at least it allowed me to keep both my switches/games open at the same time so I could travel local play between both of them which I was happy with until yesterday when it stopped allowing me to do that again. I am sure that whichever switch I have as primary will still cause the same issue in reverse.

Hi Nenya

Thank goodness you did not lose your island I would be gutted if that happened to me too after the hours I have already spent on mine. Of course all that time on the phone trying to get some help is tiring but the worst of it is we always seem to come away without any real helpful information which is equally frustrating.

What you are going through not being able to use local play happened to me when I first got my second switch thinking local play would be available immediately between them both only to find the only way I could make that work was to upgrade to a family online subscription from a single user/subscriber and that worked local play straightaway for me until this recent issue but this time I am already paying for the family online subscription but after downloading the DLC it's doing the exact same thing by closing down one switch if I am using the other so somehow I have to find a workaround but as yet I have no real idea how to especially when Nintendos own CS never seem to know what they are talking about beyond sales. Please don't worry about rooting out all your notes I would not wish you to get stressed about it I will just keep plodding on hoping at some point I can find a way to resolve it.

Slightly off topic I waited ages to buy HHP because I wanted to experience a full complete year in animal crossing and I have just about done that now which is why I took the plunge and bought it yesterday and I can honestly say I love it already despite not being what i would call a natural creative talent but it's such fun..

And yes I noticed you left the LOL off-)

i know whats wrong because i had the exact same thing happen to me. both of your switches are using the same email or nintendo address soooo only one hhp game can be played at the same time, because one switch is Already hooked up to the internet.
in order to solve the problem you have to have two separate nintendo accounts.
yep, it stinks, but thats what i was told by nintendo myself *i called them 3 days ago asking that same question*.

Hi

I agree it stinks I have never known anything like this until I bought a switch and started playing AC however it did solve my local play issue when i bought the family subscription and that was working perfectly until the day I bought the DLC the other so I am not sure if that's a glitch. I am wondering if you could explain a little further please for example i have no one in my current household I can ask to set up a further account with different details as even if i set up a separate account for myself I would of course have to use my name and same bank details so i doubt that would work so I was wondering if a friend of mine set up a separate account for me I could do that but how does that help my second switch being played on the same wireless connection in my home? Sorry for the further questions but I am trying to get it straight in my head what I need to do to continue to play both switches open at home with local play..

If it helps any, I have two Nintendo accounts two emails and 2 switches which can all Wifi or connect locally.
We also have another 2 members with Nintendo accounts and switches that are on the Family plan and can connect.
They are all connected to my bank account.
All you need is to add a separate Nintendo account with it's own email address to add them to your family plan and beable to Wifi, or local.

I only have HHP on one switch. I think your issue is that you downloaded one purchased copy to both switches. It'll be the same as if you downloaded one copy of the main game to 2 switches, they wouldn't beable to connect with each other?

I am not sure how you would rectify this apart from deleting the Nintendo account from the 2nd switch and starting with a new Nintendo account. You would lose the game data doing this. Maybe save it first encase you need it back.

Just my thoughts, don't delete anything unless you find out for sure you need too.

Even with having two different Nintendo accounts for two switches I still had problems going between islands. I fixed it by switching which switch was the primary. It’s small problem since that means I can’t have the dlc for both my island reps at the same time.

Hi Liz,

Thanks for that extra information I will look into that. I had thought of using my secondary email before but thought using the same bank account details might have caused an issue especially since both switches are using the same wifi as well.

Hi azurill,

That seems to be a reasonably easy fix so i might try that first but I was truly hoping for a way to be able to play local play and have the DLC installed on both switches at the same time as well but from all the comments that seems almost impossible..

Yea I was really hoping to be able to have the dlc for both island reps at the same time. This was the only fix I could find to be able to go back and forth between islands.

Hi azurill

So I am wondering for example if I de-register one of my switches and get my friend at a new address to set this switch up in her name plus register as a single user online subscription and buy the HHP DLC on that switch again in her name then allow it to connect to her internet before bringing it back to me might work? First I am wondering if I would lose my island on that switch going this route but if not then what happens when she brings me the switch back and its operating under my wifi again but in her name do you think I would be able to have both switches/games open at the same time enabling me to get back to being able to use local play? I am assuming the switch now registered with my friend will be seen as sort of visiting switch when operating on my wifi again instead of 2 switches operating on the same wifi at the same address if you know what I mean?

whew I hope I explained that in a way you can understand lol

I’m not sure how that would work. I used two different profiles and two different Nintendo accounts to set mine up so that I could go between islands . It worked perfectly fine until the dlc came out. Right now the only way my island rep on switch two can visit the island rep on switch one is if the the rep on switch two can not use the DLC. So as long as the dlc is on switch one it works going between islands. When I have time I’m going to try and make another profile on both switches and see if my island reps can visit the new profile without any problems.

Hi azurill,

If you ever figure it out please let me know. I cannot currently use local play at all because I cannot keep the 2 games open on both switches like I could before I downloaded the DLC so at this point I am just so pleased I restrained myself when HHP first came out and concentrated on getting both my islands to almost how I wanted them before buying it-)

I will let you know if I figure any of it out. It can be a bit confusing.
