Hi everyone! Long time animal crossing fan, first time forum member :)

Got into the series with wild world when it was released, played tons of New Leaf back in 2013-2014.
Thinking of getting New Horizons for the Switch, but I just reset my New Leaf town last week, playing a while every day.
I really miss Streetpassing, getting cool homes set up at the Happy Home Showcase, visiting
dream adresses, trading fruit and furniture with my friends.

I was happy and surprised when I found this site, glad to participate on the forums
and in this community ^^,

Take care, and if anyone wants to play some New Leaf, I'm game!🌿

Welcome Oskar! I'm glad you've decided to join us! 🎉😊

There is still a pretty active New Leaf following here, so you will fit right in. 😊

I haven't played New Leaf, but I'm interested to know how your town is progressing? Do you have a favourite villager?

hello there! welcome to tbt! it’s so nice to meet you. ☺️🍃

i’m really happy to hear that you’re having fun with new leaf! i haven’t played it in a few years myself, but it’s definitely a great game. i totally recommend new horizons as well!

anyways, i hope you enjoy the forums! i look forward to seeing you around. <3

Thank you both for welcoming me 😊

My town is good S.J. I've been fairly quick to upgrade my house, get a second floor, filling up the
museum with bugs, fish, fossils, two art pieces🦊. I actually got Bones as one of my first
villagers, and he was, along with Bill, my first ever back in Wild World 😌. I also like Olaf.

Thank you for recommending new horizons Xara. :)
Anything I should know before buying? I know about downloading seasonal events and such.
Things to keep in mind in relation to past games?

Hello and welcome!

There's a lot of differences between past titles and NH, most clearly the slower progression in the beginning; NL was pretty much set up in the first two or three days, if I recall correctly, and then you were in the game and playing. NH can take several days to a month depending on how much you are doing each day to finish the set up and actually get into the game. Also, villager mechanics are pretty different. You start with two islanders, and you can set their home locations, but they will only ever have basic wood interiors and sleeping bags, not their base interiors (if that bothers you). Because you are building the island, you are also gonna have to place the new homes and it takes a while to get them all set up, for instance I restarted recently (about 9/12) and I've been playing almost every day and am still in the setup phase. But it is relaxing to just hang out and play, no grinding or anything. If I could compare it to NL, my personal opinion is that NL has more game-play wise, a longer lifespan if you will, but I really prefer the new graphics and I enjoy a lot of the DIY stuff. Pros and cons, as all games have.

Great to see you around and welcome again! 💖

no problem! i think @/Msskanira covered a good chunk of the differences between new horizons and past titles in terms of gameplay, but here are two other things i think might be beneficial to know;

unlike with the previous games, in order to access online features (the dream suite, visiting other people and having them visit you, downloading and browsing custom patterns that other people have made, etc), you will need a nintendo switch online membership. it’s not very expensive (i pay $24.99 CAD for a one-person membership that lasts a year), but it’s the main difference i can think of.
there are currently a lot of features and npcs missing. comparing it to new leaf, new horizons is currently missing gracie, kapp’n and his family, tortimer, dr. shrunk, copper and booker, harriet, lyle, phineas, wendall, blanca, porter, brewster, digby, katie, chip, nat, the pelicans (pete, phyllis and pelly), a bunch of furniture items, minigames, tortimer’s island, a lot of buildings (the roost, the police station, the post office, etc) and a bunch of other things. some npcs, such as rover, reese and cyrus, no longer play an integral or big part in new horizons, and only appear for events (rover for the may day maze, reese and cyrus for wedding season in june). nobody knows if everything that’s currently missing will be in new horizons at some point, but nintendo is slowly rolling out updates. the next big one is scheduled for november, which will bring back brewster, the roost and other stuff. i still recommend the game in spite of all this, but if the missing content is something that would bother you, i definitely recommend waiting until some more updates have dropped.

there’s of course a bunch of smaller differences as well, such as;
villagers no longer being able to move out without permission.
being able to choose where buildings go (while also being able to relocate them later for a fee!).
the pricing of in-game items and services have changed a bit. for example, an upright piano in new leaf costed 3,200 bells, whereas it costs 53,000 bells in new horizons. other instruments and electronics (ex. tvs) are also much more expensive than they were in the past. it now also costs 200 bells to send just one letter, whereas the postal system was free in new leaf and a 4-pack of stationery only costed 60-80 bells.
in new horizons, you carry a handy little device with you called a nookphone that has various apps on it, such as your island map, custom designs, etc. you’re also able to complete nook mile achievements (similar to the badges from new leaf) and earn nook miles (similar to MEOW coupons) that can be used to purchase furniture, features (character customization options, more custom design slots and more!), etc.
all tools break after you use them a certain number of times, including the gold ones. this becomes annoying very quickly lol.
fishing tourneys and bug-offs run differently now, and are also hosted by new npcs. instead of there being 1st-3rd place winners that are determined by the size of the last bug or fish you caught, both events are now round-based. each round lasts 3 minutes, and your objective is is to catch as many bugs/fish as you can in order to earn points; the more you catch, the more points you earn, and reaching a certain number of points is how you earn trophies. also, each round after your first one now costs 200 bells to participate in if it’s just you. if you’re participating on someone else’s island, or if someone else is participating on yours, each round is free.
you know how in previous games, if you were bit by a tarantula or stung by a scorpion, you’d pass out and wake up in front of your house? well, the same thing happens if you get stung by wasps now. the first time you get stung, you’ll be fine, but if you get stung again without healing from the first one with medicine, you’ll pass out. also, saving and quitting will no longer heal your character’s swollen eye if they get stung; it won’t heal until you use medicine.

that’s about all i can think of right now, but i’ll edit this if i can think of any other differences and would be happy to answer any questions you may have! i hope this helps somewhat. 😅
