OK so I’ll admit I was a Goosebumps kid— enjoyed the books, but also the show. When I was older I got into “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” and found it even creepier and more compelling than most Goosebumps episodes.
A few years ago I REALLY got into “Tales from the Crypt” and…I still kinda am, off and on. “Twilight Zone” is also pretty cool. I haven’t tried “Night Gallery” yet, but I’ve heard good things.
I don’t really vibe with Monsters or Tales from the Darkside, though. I don’t like the special effects for whatever reason.
I also enjoy the anime “Laughing Salesman,” which is kinda like this, except the Laughing Salesman character is the only one in every episode.
And no, I am NOT an American Horror Story fan, mostly bc I’m anti-Ryan Murphy.
YES!! I absolutely love these kinds of series! Growing up, I was into Goosebumps, R.L. Stine's The Haunting Hour, and Creepshow! I totally agree with you, “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” is way creepier and compelling than Goosebumps. I haven’t checked out Tales from the Crypt or Night Gallery, but now I’m definitely curious! I’ve seen a few seasons of American Horror Story, but it didn’t really grab me the way I thought it would. I do like the concept of The Twilight Zone and would like to watch more but sometimes I find it hard keep my focus with black-and-white episodes.

I honestly first got into Tales from the Crypt bc of all the big-name actors they had in it, but obviously a good story didn’t necessarily need a famous actor. The last season is interesting bc production moved to the UK, so there were more British actors. However, the stories weren’t as good as in earlier seasons.
My dad is also a fan of “Alfred Hitchcock Presents”, which is more mystery-based, but has similar spooky vibes.
I also liked some episodes of the “Twilight Zone” remake from the ‘80s. The newer “The Outer Limits” was Ok too.
Yes, I think it's Amazing Stories that has an episode about an evil hairpiece call "Hell Toupee". Very 80's.
Low quality, anti-copyright version on youtube:
Also there's been confusion about who owns Tales from the Crypt, so no one can legally copyright strike it off of youtube right now. There's also a Saturday morning cartoon version.
One more thing, a friend suggests Elvira.

There was also Eerie Indiana on Fox Kids in the 90's, and the Disney Channel had So Weird. So Weird started out with writers from the Outer Limits, which I haven't seen, but I love that Disney show, at least the first part. I assume there was executive meddling, because Disney is going to Disney.

- Are You Afraid of the Dark? was basically my intro to the genre since I was a Nickelodeon kid in the 90s and Are You Afraid of the Dark? was part of the Saturday night Snick lineup. I always looked forward to it when the weekend rolled around. Still pop a few episodes on to watch in October to this day. The swimming pool episode, The Tale of the Dead Man's Float, ruled in particular, haha. I LOVE the intro too, the creepy song and visuals, they live in my brain rent free to this day. I wish I had a Midnight Society in my childhood, that would've been awesome.
There was an Are You Afraid of the Dark? revival series, split into three seasons, between 2019, 2021 and 2022. I only knew about and watched the first season in 2019, the Carnival of Doom. I loved that one. I'll have to seek out the other two seasons if they're as good as the first season was.
- Tales from the Crypt was also an early taste of the genre. I caught a few episodes when they'd show up, but I didn't really follow it as closely. I kind of want to revisit it now that I'm older. Love the Cryptkeeper, he's an icon. I've heard good things about the Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight movie, but I've thus far never gotten around to it. I think I'll make a point to watch that this year, and furthermore, I think I'll take the opportunity to delve back into the series itself.
-The 90s Goosebumps television series was...not my cup of tea. There were a few good episodes, I especially loved the Haunted Mask episodes that started the show off. The television show was a bit too campy for me and I had a preference for Are You Afraid of the Dark?, but I was a big fan of the book series. I was particularly fond of the Give Yourself Goosebumps line of books. I will say though, that while the tv series wasn't really for me, that intro song is still a bop and so nostalgic.
By the way, if you too were a fan of either the book series or the tv show, the Goosebuds podcast is fun to listen to.
- I love the original 1959 version of The Twilight Zone and have had a tradition to watch episodes of it on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day for like over a decade now, dating back to when I used to have cable years ago and the Syfy channel would run a New Year's marathon of the series. Never bothered with any of the reboots, though kind of curious about Jordan Peele's version from 2019.
- I've watched some of the Creepshow series on the Shudder streaming service and enjoyed some of it. Admittedly haven't watched enough of it, but I'll have to get back to it and see what I think of it as a whole. Also, I highly recommend the first Creepshow movie from 1982 that was directed by George A. Romero (director of Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, etc.) and featuring short stories by Stephen King made for the movie. As you'd guess, the movie is itself an anthology. Creepshow 2 is...much lesser in quality, but The Raft short story is fun.
Speaking of older anthology movies, the 1963 movie Black Sabbath from director Mario Bava is good. Less old, and more specific to Halloween, director Michael Dougherty's 2007 movie Trick 'R Treat is one of my favorites and it's an anthology as well. Director Masaki Kobayashi's 1964 movie Kwaidan was also good if you're open to subtitled foreign films. There are other anthology movies I've yet to explore, maybe I'll do that this year.
- I was too old to be aware of R.L. Stine's The Haunting Hour at the time it came out but I'm always open to more horror and would be willing to check it out if it holds up.
-I've heard of but never seen Eerie Indiana, Night Gallery, Outer Limits, and Tales from the Darkside. Any of those worth checking out?

- I'll have to seek out The Laughing Salesman anime you mentioned, as well as the Alfred Hitchcock Presents series that you mentioned your father likes.
- Similar to you, QueenCobra, I too have avoided American Horror Story.

I remember watching an episode of “Haunting Hour” where Manny from Modern Family (I think it’s the same actor?) gets haunted by La Llorona. It genuinely freaked me out! Also, there’s one where the SpongeBob voice actor plays a creepy children’s show host…it’s funnier than it is scary lol.
I think there were a few good Tales from the Darkside episodes…but overall not my favorite series.
I love anthology series because if you don't care for one story you can just move on and check out a different one. I grew up watching some of the series mentioned in the first post and that got me into the horror genre. I have to agree with previous opinions on American Horror Story, it's been hit and miss. The earlier seasons were pretty good then after awhile I don't know what happened with the writing, I just couldn't get past the first couple episodes for the last few seasons. And the last season I fully watched was actually kind of bad imo. I feel like they should've ended it at Apocalypse. There was also an anthology spinoff American Horror Stories with some interesting plots in some of the episodes. Overall though I would say avoid if you dislike too many explicit/disgusting scenes because I don't care for how over the top they go with it sometimes. Now thinking about some other ones I liked. The Twilight Zone had a reboot a few years back that I enjoyed. Channel Zero was alright. The last horror anthology I watched was Tales From The Void which had some interesting ideas although the episodes were very short. I know theres others I'm forgetting. Also, since this often has horror-ish themes, I'm looking forward to the new Black Mirror season coming out. Now's a good time to catch up on that one if you haven't seen them all yet. And if you're into anime, definitely check out the Mononoke and Junji Ito series. Guess this post ended up kind of long, I just really like spookyness

I’ve heard of the AHS spin-off, but once I heard there was a story with a tapeworm, I had to nope outta there.
Yes, I do enjoy how anthologies have a variety of stories, because honestly I don’t think most of the plots would work as entire series, if that makes sense. But they’re perfect for a fun little episode.
Junji Ito has some cool stuff! I mostly know him for that spiral story…I forget the name.

It's good you avoided that episode. In the last season I think some of the better episodes were the backrooms one and the guy with the AI assistant. You are thinking of Uzumaki, I like that one too
I have also seen some of the Filipino horror movie series “Shake, Rattle, and Roll”. They usually have three different stories within one movie (hence the anthology category), but I’ve only seen the ones from the ‘90s. I think they still make new ones.

I also want to say…about the newer Outer Limits…there was one episode where a monster dragged a kid under the bed. The kid went missing and the cops had to investigate. It freaked me out when I was kid, but when I watched the full episode, I was glad they caught the monster…even though it randomly moved to France (?)
I loved Goosebumps and The Twilight Zone when I was a child, although for Goosebumps I was more into the books. I did watch some episodes of the show as well though. The Twilight Zone was a show I watched with my parents, and a few years ago I also binge rewatched some episodes. The mouthless girl from the The Twilight Zone movie scared me as a kid.
For other horror series, the only one I watched a bit of was American Horror Story. I watched a few episodes of the first season but never got around to finishing it.
