How are people trading with each other?

I went to the airport to see if I could visit someone online and it says I need a subscription to something? It's not like New Leaf where you can visit anyone as long as you have a friend code?

You need to have Switch Online subscription to play online

It's a paid subscription service, it's thankfully pretty cheap tho!

There's a 7 day trial, I'm using that before buying the year plan, just to have the extra free days lol.
