How can I keep a lost item I found?

So, I've seen some people using lost items as props before, but how can you keep them? I just found one (didn't even pick it up yet), and I'm thinking about how can I use it (it's the notebook).

don't return it, just keep hold of it for a few days and eventually it'll say "what was this again?" and at that point u can drop it on the ground or on a table

fastest way is to TT back a day, i think, but if you're against TTing you just have to wait a few days. if you still want to be able to talk to your villagers, check the item's clue and then give it to a villager who doesn't align with the clue so they can tell you who it belongs to -- then you just have to avoid that specific villager, and can interact with all the others as normal.

Thank you! I was unsure of how it works because I tried keeping one some time ago, and I thought it would be available for use as a prop on the next day, but it was still labeled as a lost item, so I ended up returning it to it's owner.

I think it will stay around the next day if you don't pick it up also. But I'm not entirely sure, so it's best to just pick it up and not give it to the owner. I did this for a few lost items in NL and also the santa bag. I don't know if the mystery sack is removed from you inventory after Toy Day in NH, as I finished it all the way this time.

I believe it's 2 days after picking up that you can start using it. Unfortunately, they can't go in your storage and I believe they count as trash by the HHA. I don't mind though because I think they're neat!

Yeah, I plan on using the book to decorate the table I placed in Marina's yard haha

I have 3 in my house. one thing to be aware of is that for hha scoring lost items count as trash, anything that is dropped rather than placed counts as trash really. if u dont care about hha score it dont matter but if u do it will knock ur score down.

The one thing to keep in mind is that, if you talk to a villager while holding the item, you will NOT be able to speak to them normally. You will only be able to ask about the item. That's why it's better to do with a secondary character or with time travel.

I have kept items accidentally after picking them up and forgetting to return them. They will already be "usable" the next day, you don't have to wait a few

Yes it happened today with me. I picked up the lost item and I wanted to give them fruits as a gift but there were only two comments I have to choose from so keep in mind that your secondary character is a good choice

Keep hold of the item in your inventory, in a few days it'll say 'What was this?'. I plan on using some of the 'lost' items as decoration on my 2nd island so I've been hoarding them
