ok so i'm pretty sure that in new leaf every new day was completely new, everything was reset and if you went back in time to a previously played day it wouldn't be the same in terms of weather, items in shop, random visitors etc. this does not seem to be the case in new horizons.

i TT:d back to the current date from two days forward and it was the same as it was when i played that very day before: label was there again and the same items were in nook's cranny (it even had a sold out sign from when i bought an item on the other same day). however i think the items in the able sister's shop were different, i had a new message bottle on the beach and there was a new golden hole. i don't think there were any fossils, though.

so do any of you have any more information on how the days in new horizons work? i'm a little confused, will the same items always be sold on one specific day? does this only happen when you go back in time to a previously played day? (So will i have new day tomorrow and the day after, even though i have played those days already?) and what's up with visitors such as kicks, label and celeste, are they set to come on specific days, so if i know celeste was there on march 31st 2020 i can go back to that date and she will always be there? i am confusion

I've noticed whenever I go back a day it doesn't seem to reset, it's just like you said... in-progress projects don't get completed, store stock stays the same, flowers don't grow, etc, just as if I hadn't changed the day at all until I go a day forward again--the only exception seeming to be that I once went backward to February and it did put snow on the ground and such. I also have a meteor shower every time it's April 1st and Celeste is always there, every single time, and to get to it I have to go backwards to March 31st and then forward to April 1st. I've used this to get recipes from her so yes, you can do that.

It sounds as if the game has a running record of what happened on each day. If you go back further, such as a week, or 2 weeks, will things still look the same?

huh, interesting. so if you go back to april 1st she isn't there, you have to go forward? that's weird... cool observation though!

i have a vague memory of playing new leaf and this happening too?
i may be way wrong lol but i have a feeling that this happened to me when i TT'ed backwards in new leaf. new flowers/fossils didn't spawn, projects weren't completed, trees/bushes didn't grow, mail wasn't delivered... etc. i'm not sure about shops and npcs, though.
i don't know if it is different in new horizons because i haven't time traveled so far.

I could be remembering some details wrong but I believe that if I just go straight to April 1st without going back & then forward Isabelle doesn't announce the meteor shower or any news at all, so I haven't looked to see if Celeste would still be there. It's weird though because I've heard turnips still rot if you go back a day so I'm not sure how it works tbh!

If you go backwards: turnips rot, stock in nooks will be the same as that day including a sold sign if you bought an item, projects arent completed, villagers dont move, events remain the same, able sisters stock will change except for the mannequins.
If you go forwards: like any other day transition it will be new events, new nook stock, new able sisters stock, projects will be done, villagers will move, Turnips will not rot.
If you TT forward to a day you were already on: villagers will move, projects will be completed, same events, same nook stock, new able sisters stock aside from mannequins, turnips will not rot.

i just TT:d forward to the next day and there are still sold out signs and the same items in the shop... weird.

yeah that might be true, i know things didn't grow in new leaf but the items being sold were new though, right?
