How do I get to the other side of my island?

This might be a really dumb question but I recall from the Direct video that you can basically catapult yourself there but I've not had any suggestions to make one? Is there any other way to get across to the other sides of your islands?

If you were able to get Blathers yesterday, by donating 5 creatures to Nook, when you talk to him the first time, he should give you a DIY recipe for the vaulting pole so you can explore the island for creatures that he needs. Technically you can get it day one if you donated 5 creatures to nook before I think 6 am. That's when the day started for New Leaf, so I think it could be the same for New Horizons. If it's already past 6 in your town, you have to wait for Blathers to show up the next day I believe. You can put his tent down, but he won't arrive until the next day.

There is a pole, that allows you to cross rivers. However, I don't know if you will get it on day 1. All I managed to get was a watering can, a flimsy angle and net. I don't even have an ax, hehe.

I thought the same thing too, but then read online that you can move your house and other buildings later in the game!!
