you plant them by the beach, but not to close to the water, and not to far from the water.
XD You Would Know I Got Them From You XD

You have to plant them on the edge of the sand so the hole is touching both the normal earth and the sand. If it's not touching the earth & the sand then it won't grow.

actually it can pretty much be anywhere throughout the bottom acre of the village.

just plant it right above the sand line, or somewhere near there.

Your best bet is to plant them On the shore line where the dirt ends and sand begins

3rd One Plated And Failed Again...

I Need Coconuts Now...

Cedars (The Pine-like trees) can only grow in the upper portions of the village.
Regular Trees (Maple-Looking?) can grow anywhere throughout.
Coconut (Tropical) can only grow in the bottom layers, but particularly close to the beach. I don't recall actual specifications, as was mentioned, such as them HAVING to touch the sand - that would be gaudy.

Coconut trees are, supposedly, more difficult to grow - RATHER they have more difficulty growing themselves. I don't recall there being any pre-requisite to growing them. Just have a beach.

The guide says coconuts can only be grown in summer months. Said something about needing tropical conditions to grow, so this time of the year wouldn't particullary work.....
