How do you guys determine your dreamies?

I never purposefully set out to define my dreamy villagers, but I invite villagers to my island and get a "feel" for them, and some of them have just stuck and I couldn't imagine my island without them.

It has a lot to do with how attached I get to them, their personality, and the interactions I have with them. My absolute never leaves are Agnes and Louie (my ACNH starter villagers), Patty, Rhonda and Savannah.

Savannah was a surprise because I invited her to my island thinking she was cute and she might stay a little while then move on, but she is always sweet, always smiling and sings around the island, rain or shine. She adds something very wholesome and positive to the island.

I love all of the villagers on my island, but I am planning to invite some other villagers to feel if we're a good match. 😊💜 I've been thinking of inviting Maple lately. We'll see! 😊🐻

Mine are mostly the same as when I was a kid with Wild World, then they changed as more animals came out or I met them along the way. Being much older now, I choose my dreamies for nostalgia (Maple) or as a reminder of a loved one who passed (Raymond, regrettably lol). Most of my islanders are exactly the same as my town from New Leaf though!

I tried out a lot of villagers on my island.
I think I had about 50 of them.

I chose the ones that appealed to me from the full roster, and tried them each out to see which ones clicked with me.

I dont have all my dreamies on my island, but that's because I want one of every personality and only 1 of each species. I love 3 goats but could only have 1 for example.

My list is always changing, but I have a few villagers that have been with me since the very start, like Chief( had a massive crush on him when I was 9 and I used to play WW), Lolly because she looks like my cat, Bea because she has freckles like I do and Raymond just because he was my first campsite villager and I kinda like him a lot. The rest of my villagers are cycling and villagers I thought I would have had forever, like Molly, Melba, Bob and Fang, have left a long time ago. Right now I’m looking forward to have Bill, Wolfgang, O’Hare and maybe Julia, Blanche, Flora and Bones and I’m willing to let some of my current villagers, like Bam, Erik and Rosie, go, to make space for some new ones ☺️

a lot of them are either nostalgia (poppy and lolly especially) or they're characters i've grown to love after finding them on mystery islands (bam, filbert, fang, freya).

raymond and molly were two characters i never had much of an opinion on, knew they were popular but that's about it, i ended up loving them after having them on my island lol. i also ended up loving bianca since snow leopards are my favorite animals irl.

i still haven't found my final dreamie, i just rotate villagers out every now and again. i have some nostalgia for lily and pekoe so maybe one of them could come in sometime. :)

I didn't really plan out who would come to my island. Honestly, I thought I'd be moving out my starters - Cherry and Snake, but they've become two of my favorite villagers. A couple others were ones I came across on tours and hadn't seen since GC days, so thought it would be nice to have them again (Gruff, Sally, and Filbert). The others were chance encounters who looked like they would fit the feel of my island.

I used to be adamant about not letting villagers move, but I'm starting to think about letting a few go. Some will always stay, though.

I never really looked into villagers while playing some of the older games (mainly WW) so my original dreamies were villagers that moved into my town that I found cute and got on well with and for nostalgia reasons a couple of these have remained as dreamy villagers for me, mostly Wolfgang and Peanut who were some of my original favourite villagers.

When NL was released I looked into the new villagers so some of my dreamies were determined by viewing the ones I found cutest and then falling in love with them when they moved into my town, the main two been Fauna (my overall favourite villager as she reminds me of Pokemon Eevee) and Molly (a villager I think is really sweet and I love her friendly nature) who have both remained dreamies of mine throughout NL and into NH.

In NH I mostly use island hopping to help me determine my dreamies as I enjoy searching for new villagers and collecting their photos so I often cycle through villagers (other then about 5 I have that are already permanent) and pick my dreamies based on how appealing I find the villager and how well they fit onto my island, though I usually lean towards certain species or personalities.

I couldn't decide on exact dreamies, either. I mean, I have a handful of villagers who are permanent favorites (like Ursala and Dobie) but otherwise the villagers I want on my island are constantly changing, too.

So... I finally just decided that's how I'd do my island- no permanent villagers. Just ones I like. They all move out eventually, some stay longer than others, and I change how my island's arranged to accommodate different houses and stuff. I also found that, no matter how much I love a villager, after awhile I got a little bored of them. So it just works better to have a more dynamic island. Now I especially like to focus on seasonal villagers- like I had Lucky over Halloween, Marina last summer, and Stitches for Toy Day.

But, early on, I totally bought into the idea that you were supposed to find your dream villagers and then keep them forever. Which, if it works for you, awesome! But I've come to realize that just doesn't work for everyone. And now that I'm no longer trying to pick permanent villagers, I'm able to relax and enjoy the game WAAAY more. Same with how I finally gave up having a fixed town layout- it's way more fun and relaxing to decorate for holidays and seasons and change things as I see fit!

I've never really had any dreamie, aside from Sherb? I just wanted him because of his adorable derpy face. At that time I didn't even know he was super rare. I just saw him in a video, thought he was adorable, and wanted him.

But otherwise, kinda just see them and go *Yes! I want him!* then I try to get them, not really a dreamie. I found out about Kid Cat. We went from talking to Mira, to her talking about him, showed me a picture, and thought he was amazing. Once I got him I loved him even more. Also how I found our they got depressed if you talk to them for awhile. Opps.

Others I love, I have all my dreamies on this island (Except Zell) but I'd never get rid of any. I met all of them for different reasons;

-Marshal I got for representing a character, and now hes a favorite, who followed me to my second island. Even then the only time I first got him was in Pocket camp when I unlocked him, and decided to put him to work. So hes still my partner currently.
--
-My friend had Bruce, and I always thought he was cool, so I decided to use his amiibo when I got it, and now hes a premier
--
-Lopez was love at first sight, I just loved that deer, so like Bruce, he joined. We share similar clothes too lol.
--
-Cheif I didnt know existed, but after I got Audie I wanted another wolf so was checking out wolves, saw him. Wanted him. Looks more like a fox to me.
--
-Never thought in a million years I'd have mister office cat, but hes staying. I just put up that board by random, a very nice person helped me get him. but now have grown to really liking him. Even had my friend hold him for me.
-
-Static I played him, and Bunnie in that Wii-u game and thought he was just so cool. Which is the definition of him. So my friend lent me his amiibo, and hes staying forever. One of my favorites. His house is perfect
--
-Filbert was on Pocket camp, and he was my favorite boy, he was my helper for years, and I still cant get enough of his derpy face. Hes still with me on my camp. Him and Noami, longest running villagers.
--
-Genji I only knew about from my friend because she was picking between Genji and Snake. After a bit of seeing him alot on here, I decided to see if I could find him, and I did. Also really happy he was a jock. I love my ninja rabbit. Still would love Snake.

Well, theres my villager stories ^^

this is probably superficial of me, but the only things that i take into account when deciding whether to invite a villager onto my island is their design and any previous interactions that i’ve had with them. my list of favourites is quite long, but i don’t think there’s anything specific design-wise that makes me like a villager; i just like who i like lol. however, none of that is what determines whether i keep a villager permanently or not - my bond with them or lack thereof does.

like i said, my list of favourite villagers is long as hell, but that doesn’t mean that i’m able to bond with all of them. with some villagers, my love for them may never go beyond liking their design and potentially having a few good memories with them, and that’s okay. tldr; that’s how i determine my dreamies. i have too many favourites to limit myself to a specific list of villagers, so i just invite whoever i want and if i bond with them/can’t imagine them not being on my island, they become permanent. my list of dreamies never stays the same, but that’s part of what makes the game exciting to me. :)

I restarted my island a while ago and both on the first and the second one I never had a set villager list I wanted to achieve. Usually I just go island hopping without a goal and pick up whoever appeals to me in that moment, Usually villagers who live with me for a while start to grow on me and I'm having a hard time letting them go. Most of my current villagers are my "dreamies" now, but that's because I got to know them more and don't want to let them go. Rarely I pick out someone's design on purpose and declare them my dreamy, it comes naturally for me.

I also try to keep one of each personality type around so that the dialogue is varied. This also helps me keep an open mind. When looking at the uchi villagers there's not one where I'd say "awesome I like this one and want them". I just adopted Fuchsia on a whim because I needed an uchi and now I really like her a lot :)

I have a lot of villagers I like, so with that in mind, it mostly comes down to a combination of nostalgia and current interests. Some of them, such as Judy and Hamlet, I had plans on letting go, but I eventually fell in love with them and chose to keep them forever. Others, such as Sterling and Phoebe, I knew I wanted on the island straight away.

I'm still missing three dreamies, but I'm not in a rush to get them. Once my island's been terraformed, I may be more determined to find them, but for now, I'll wait, and just gather Photos from visiting villagers. There are some I'd still like to have visit - Cyd, Megan, Truffles, Axel and Raymond - but not necessarily keep them forever.

Most of mine are my starter villagers or other villagers I grew super attached to in my first Wild World town (5 - Hopper, Puddles, Mint, Pudge, Tank).

Tank ended up being one of my starters in NH by chance. Pashmina was my other starter, who I fell in love with and decided to keep because I had never really loved any of the uchi villagers.

Apollo is my birthday twin, so I try to have him in each AC game.

I never played the Gamecube game a whole lot, but my favorite villager from then was always Kiki. I love cats, especially black cats.

Then I found Megan while island hopping and decided to take her, then fell in love with her.

And my favorite smug is Leopold - his house is a little classroom and I'm a teacher so of course I fell in love with him.

I do have other favorites, but this set won out over all the others. I have all of them as amiibo (except for Megan of course), so they may not always be on my island all the time, but they'll always come back.

1: The villager must not be in any of my New Leaf or City Folk Towns so i can give a chance to new ones.

2: Each have to be from a different species.

3: Five Male, five Female

4: 1 of each personality.

I have played every game since the first, but I never had dreamies until NL I believe (I can't remember if I did in WW, but I know for sure for NL). In NL I had a history of resetting so many times that I was afraid if I did dreamies again in NH, I would keep resetting again since I somehow linked Dreamies to Resetting. Therefore, I decided that I was going to keep an open mind about dreamies and try to give everyone a chance. The only except was Rudy. I was going to have him on my island no matter what. However, I still followed only two rules:

1) 1 of Every Personality
2) 5 Males, 5 Females

As I tried, I came across some very good villagers that has become favorites, but could not make my dreamies list. I started going back to previous experiences on villagers I liked, even when reviewing ALL the villagers possible to get. In the end, my NH dreamy list is :

  1. Molly - Really loved her in NL so I brought her back.
  2. Rudy - My favorite villager ever, also met in NL. I was NOT not going to have him on my island.
  3. Bones - Also had in NL and became good friends. I wanted to have him again.
  4. Julia - Came across her in a villager list and really liked her design. *New to the List*
  5. Beau - Another favorite of mine from NL.
  6. Kidd - Came across on an island and ended up liking him enough to keep him (the only one from the island that stayed and is new to the list).
  7. Fang - Replaced Chief originally on the island. I had Chief from NL but for some reason, I couldn't connect with Chief like I did, so I brought in Fang and he is much better). *New to the List*
  8. Penelope - I had her temporarily in NL and ended up liking her surprisingly. Then she moved and I was sad. So I brought her back.
  9. Aurora - My OG fave villager. I never had her living in any of my towns/island since GC and I really wanted to have her again this time around. *Sort of the New to the List?*
  10. Agnes - Another one from NL, who I also had temporarily and moved out WITHOUT telling me. I always thought she was cool.
This time around, I am actually happy with the list. The only that could change is Fang, but I feel like he's going to stick around and I actually don't feel like I need to reset this time. I am actually happy with everything this time around.

A mix between designs I like, themes, and villagers I've grown attached to.

I thought Tia was kinda cool design wise when I saw her, but I did t intend to keep her. Now I couldn't get rid of her lol

Same with Cube, I always wanted him on my GameCube town so when I saw him in NH I had to have him

My dreamie is someone I met in gc days and was very close to ingame. Pierce. Other than that they change around a little.

I have too many dreamies. Too many good villagers. It's 100% based on their looks/theme, though another part of it is I keep my villagers in pairs on my island so that kinda dictates who stays. Genji/Bunnie, Pecan/Marshal, Savannah/Reneigh, Croque/Ribbot, Lolly/Punchy
