How does buying and selling villagers work?

I see posts on Nooks Cranny like "Looking to buy Skye" or whatever villager they are looking for. How does this process work, how is it possible that you can buy and sell villagers? Sorry if this is obvious im new

The day they move away, they have everything in their house packed in boxes, if another player comes by and talks to them, you can invite them to your island. The etiquette normally is you pay half, invite the villager and pay the other half, but that depends a lot on who are you trading with. Just pay close attention to their wifi rating

So you usually use bells, Nook tickets or trade items (or some people do villager giveaways too). Once the villager is in boxes (moving out) the person can come to your town and ask them to move to their island.
However, because of a currently glitch I'd hold of selling villagers to other players.

WARNING: there is currently an advisory in place against purchasing villagers due to the villager plot glitch! If you buy a villager take extra precaution to make sure that villager was NOT forced out via amiibo or campground, because you could end up really screwing up your game~
