How does some people...

Sure, I have to print some, but on the discord I use (when I use it), I trade for NMT's instead of bells.

Villagers also can sell for a ton of nmts.

Other than the ones we accomplish ourselves, there are treasure islands, or in my case I won a couple of contests in gamefaqs last year (the first contest I won 70 nmts and the last one I won 400). A friend used to run a treasure island so I'd just pick up a bunch everytime I visit since I have crappy luck villager hunting on the mystery islands lol.

I get a lot from Nookazon, and I don’t even actively pursue them (I‘d much rather get certain color variations of items that I am looking for, but sometimes all a person has is NMTs to trade). I’m in the middle of earning all the DAL rewards right now, so I do use them to travel, but I can understand why some people question their use after a certain point. Hopefully, an update will come along that adds more items to purchase at the Nook Rewards kiosk.

I think a lot of the NMT back when they were able to be duped with the table glitch are still in circulation and that's how people have so many of them. Course the dupe tricks could probably still work with the tickets.

There's also people who trade desirable stuff for them or tbt. But that big bulk of tickets still had to come from somewhere and I can't imagine seeing someone spending hours grinding the Dodo computer to print out 500-1000 tickets for a single trade.
