How in the world do you get flies?

Today is going on three days that I've left an old can in front of ReTail so that I could catch a fly...but no matter what there never is one.

From online guides I've seen, that's the main way to catch a fly(apart from getting a rafflesia) but I'm not having any luck. What am I doing wrong?

Flies & ants are easier to catch from rotten turnip.
Just buy 1 spare turnip & let it rot by not selling it until next Sunday, then put it on the ground (outside).

I guess I'm going to have to stay up super late one Saturday night/Sunday morning in order to catch Joan then, haha.

This is pretty much how I did it.

However, just a little tip. If you're trying to do a perfect town streak, the turnip will not ruin it straight away; only if it's been left there and not picked up again by 6am the next day (after which, people start complaining about 'garbage.')

I still have 1 rotten turnip in my basement if you want? I'll lend it to you.
Edit: Too late, i guess? Just send me PM if you want to borrow my rotten turnip.
