How long does it take to make a hybrid?

I'm trying to make hybrids but its taking forever! How long did it take you until you got your first one?

It helps to set up the pair you want to form the hybrid like this:
x=flower o=open space (no designs, no trees, nothing at all there)

ooo.....or.....oooo
oxo.............oxxo
oxo.............oooo
ooo

In other words, horizontal or vertical, not diagonal, and surrounded by open space.

What? Diagonal works just fine, it actually gives you more spaces for potential hybrids.

This guide worked well for me, and on the third page I posted pics for people who don't understand X's and O's typed out.
