I can only get a shovel and net?

It's random which ones will show up in the shop on any given day. Sometimes the randomness brings unfortunate outcomes. Have you done all of Isabelle's introductory/tutorial chores? It is possible to get a fishing pole from her if you haven't gotten a bug net out of her already. She also gave me a watering can through the course of her chores. From my experience with Animal Crossing in general, axes and slingshots seem to show up in the shop less often than the other tools. You can always upgrade the shop by making transactions there and then they will sell more tools each day so your chances will be greater! Or if you have wifi friends, they might be able to help you out!

I dont think the slingshot shows up until Nooklings becomes T&T Mart I hate it. I missed about 5 balloons already!!!

You can hit balloons with your net when they're going from town to the beach, and from the beach to the town. I've gotten all my balloons like that.

Did you not talk to Isabelle in the town hall in the beginning? At some point she asks if you want to fish or catch bugs (something like that) and if you picked the one you didn't have a tool for, you'd eventually be able to buy one from her by telling her the shop didn't have a net/rod.

I did not realize I had to talk to Isabelle more. I ended up going to someone else's town and they gave me a fishing rod. Funny enough, I also got cherries from them - and then Isabelle gave me cherries shortly after. Ah well.

A couple more questions though: The wet suit? How do you get one of those? & with the Re-Tail store, do other animals buy things you put in the flea market? Or is it other people you let come over to your town that can buy them?

I don't want to spoil the fun of the game for myself, by asking all the questions and finding out all the things instead of just naturally going about it. But I feel so out of the loop since I haven't played an AC game in probably a year or two now...

It's so neat when you are in Re-Tail browsing or putting stuff up and a villager comes in and asks if he should buy your item!
Makes the game seem more alive when you actually see them doing things

Cassi, and when you can see the item they bought actually IN their house afterward! That's just so cool.

I agree! Within the first few minutes of playing I saw a villager shake a tree. I was floored! It's so immersive, I love it! Then, I saw a villager water a flower. I almost cried.
