Since I was curious, I decided to scan some series 5 cards into New Leaf just to see what would happen. Surprisingly, some of the SP cards worked and it made me shake my head. It's funny, nintendo really did take some old stuff, slapped a new coat of paint on it, and sold multiple versions of the exact same old things at full price. I'm glad I completed all my card series, but still...😂
It just makes me happier for the online places like the amiibo post office, since I traded for most of my cards instead of buying blind packs.
Oh, and if anyone else is curious, the series 5 cards that worked were any card that already had another one in the older 1-4 series, Tom Nook, Isabelle, KK Slider, Kicks, etc.

I think it's normal that the cards would be the same as the old ones (maybe with different outfits, occasionally.) I prefer amiibos to work across various games. Also series 1-4 included several npc repeats (Isabelle has like 3 or 4 cards plus figurines.) For someone who isn't a full collector, it makes getting those npcs slightly easier. Then again, with the npcs to villager ratio being off in series 5, one could argue they should have only included the new npcs.
