Think about it: the Nintendo DS first came out in 2004, and that is a while ago and if it follows the pattern of others, it will very soon die out for the next Game Boy or DS around the block.
But also take into consideration Nintendo's final chance to cash in on the DS, the DSi. Now I won't be buying one since I personally think it's Nintendo's experiment for their next generation... but this also happened with the Game Boy Advance. They came out with the SP, very similar to the Lite upgrade to the DS. Then there was the Micro and remember what happened? It sold TERRIBLY because the DS was coming out in a few months.. and it had no functionality to play Game Boy games in which similar things are happening to the DSi!
Are you seeing the signs? They are just too obvious. The Micro lost functionality with Game Boy games.. the DSi lost functionality with GBA games..
Nintendo is just treading down a common path.
