So the first time I visited an island I didn't realize you weren't supposed to ever return to the same island, so while I was there I built a crafting bench soni could rebuild tools. Then I learned that you are supposed to visit a new island every time you fly, but I've spent 10,000 nook miles for 5 tickets and it returns me to the same exact island every time. And my work bench is still sitting there. Can anyone tell me how that happens?

hi! you may have already received the answer for this somewhere else by now, but i’ll try to explain the best i can anyways.

nook mile islands tend to all look the same. they weren’t really designed for exploring purposes or to see different sights; they’re intended for gathering materials such as wood, stone, iron, clay, and looking for new villagers when you have a plot available on your island. for me, nook mile islands aren’t really worth traveling to unless you’re in the latter situation — the islands will still all look the same, but each one will have a different villager on it that you can talk to and invite to live on your island.

however, there are a few special nook mile islands you can come across, but they’re rare. there’s one where you can easily catch tarantulas and sharks (that are worth quite a bit of bells if you sell them), bamboo island, islands that have your sister fruit (the fruit your in-game mom sent to you at the beginning of the game, etc). you can read more about those types of islands and what they offer + how rare each one is by clicking here.

as for the crafting bench, it’s not the same exact one that you made. each nook mile island has a simple diy workbench on it.

unless you’re gathering materials or hunting for a new villager right now, i’d stop spending miles and time on tickets and islands — it’s a waste. if you still have any miles or tickets leftover, save them for the situations above (needing to gather materials and villager hunting). i’m not sure how far along you are in the game, but if you’re looking for more interesting islands that come in different seasons, times of the day, etc and offer stuff such as seasonal materials (snowflakes, acorns, mushrooms, etc), gyroid fragments, an additional diy in a bottle on the beach, etc depending on what island you’re taken to, i’d suggest kapp’n’s daily mysterious tours instead. you can only be taken to one once a day, and each trip costs 1,000 miles, but i bet you’d have more fun with them. you can read more about them (along with how to unlock kapp’n and his tours) by clicking here and here.

i hope this helps somewhat! welcome to the bell tree forums, by the way. :)

Also worth a note is that deserted islands all pull from only a small handful of geographic layouts. So it's certainly not impossible that you will see an island that looks very similar to another island you previously visited, but it's most definitely not the same island.
