I've only read a couple of his works: The Shadow over Innsmouth and At the Mountains of Madness, both great reads. I was actually introduced to Lovecraft's works by the original Alone in the Dark (the game that defined survival horror, way before Resident Evil was created), which was heavily influenced by it. I later played Shadow of the Comet (absolutely amazing graphical adventure), and its sequel: Prisoner of Ice (not as good as SotC, mainly because it's really short).
I've wanted to read some more of his novels, but I haven't had the time (and he's written way to much stuff!). I've been thinking on reading The Color Out of Time, The Dunwich Horror, or The Shadow out of Space. What do you think? Or maybe you could give a recommendation that's not among these three.
Nice, yeah the original Alone in the Dark was great. Incidentally, check out Eternal Darkness for the Cube if you can. It's really cheap and has a great Lovecrafty feel to it. I just recently played through Shadow of the Comet maybe a year ago. Definitely nice. Pretty tough, actually. I've yet to play through "Prisoner", but I have it. I was just able to pick up an original XBOX so I'm looking forward to grabbing "Dark Corners of the Earth".
Many people think At the Mountains of Madness is one of his best works. I like it (though I think it drags a little), but it's not my favorite. The Shadow Over Innsmouth is
great in my opinion.
Yeah he does have a lot, but much of it is short stories. Out of the three you mention I'd recommend The Dunwich Horror first. The Call of Cthulhu is a must-read, too. Some say it's not his best, but I really like it and it's just classic. If you like Lovecraft you
must read CoC.
Other good ones: The Thing on the Doorstep, Whispers in Darkness, Herbert West: Reanimator, and The Lurking Fear. Those are some of my favorites other than the ones we've mentioned already.
Man there are so many
other good ones, too! Now I want to go back and read them again! I still have a few to get through, too, actually. His dream stuff isn't quite as compelling to me as is his straight horror, but some is okay. Heh, guess we really veered off the subject here, huh?
Oh well! I'm always up for a good HPL discussion.
