Listening in to villagers talking

I noticed in another thread, that you can listen in to villagers talking amongst themselves.

How do you actually go about listening in?

Do you just go right beside them, or have to hit a certain button?

When there are two animals talking together (you'd know by them facing each other, using emoticons etc) walk up to one of them and press A. They will then include you in the conversation ^^

How does that work whenever I see two together they seem to be embarrassed and scatter. I'll have to try a button next time.
