There was some speculation that we might be able to have multiple islands if we have games from different regions. I have a NA copy and today I decided to check out the JP eShop just to see what would happen when I tried to buy the JP copy, but it wouldn't let me. The JP eShop says that I already own the game.
I did buy a JP Physical copy that I plan on playing on my second switch, so once that arrives I'll see if maybe the physical will allow something different.
