Good morning, I am new here and new to Animal Crossing (save for playing the Gamecube version a long time ago at release at a friends house). I am glad I found the forum and excuse me for this being my first post asking questions.

I have read many articles about the multiplayer aspects of ACNH and I still am not fully understanding. Here is what I have:

-2 Nintendo Switches
-2 Nintendo Online Accounts
-1 ACNH, but willing to buy a second copy

Here is what I want:

-To play by myself 75% of the time and have my wife join in when she wants to
-I want to do "online" play because couch co-op seems like it would be bad since the screen space is already limited (thoughts on this?)... this allows us to go all over the island separately
-Her be able to have her own tent in my village

Is this possible? We played together last night and we set up her village and she invited me to it. I had no options as far as setting up a tent or anything and it seemed like I was just a visitor. Interestingly I was able to do this with only one copy of ACNH. I have two nintendo online accounts and one is primary on one switch and the other is primary on the other.

Hopefully I have made sense here and thank you in advance for any thoughts!

you can do the first two. but not the third. you can't live on an island that isn't on the same switch.

- - - Post Merge - - -

best choice is each make a character on your irrespective islands. play as those when you jump in and out.

fun extra: you can gift items to "yourself" on the other island :)

Dang that seems fairly limited when it would be cool to have a living community with friends. Hopefully they will consider adding it.

Has anyone had any experience with local co-op? Usually there's just one or two things to do on any given screen so I can't see how it would be all that entertaining for 2-4 people without being able to go wherever you like.

I play a lot of local coop on the same island with my husband (we only have 1 Switch). I agree that I don't think it would be fun with more than 2 people at the very most. The leader can do everything. The follower has limited capabilities. They can't use their Nookphone and anything they pick up goes into the bin in Resident Services.

What we mostly use the local coop for is whenever we want to do something that takes a while and is tedious. For instance, chopping wood and getting other natural resources from our island. We split up duties where 1 person (the follower, since they can't pick up) chopping trees and hitting rocks while the other person (the leader) picks up the materials. It actually makes gathering them take less time than it would for a single player doing it. For us, it's not a big deal if 1 character ends up getting too many materials. If the other person needs materials, then the person with a lot will drop some on the ground in a central location for the other person to pick up later.

It does seem a lot easier to do other Animal Crossing related stuff (fishing, bug catching, setting up your house, etc) by yourself though, as the follower can't really participate and gets bored. If you play on the same island, you'd be far better off taking turns and playing solo for most of this stuff.
