I'm wondering what the basics are of having more than one town?

Can you use multiple cartridge copies on the same DS?
Can you have a cartridge and a digital town on the same DS?

I'm asking because I've been thinking about making another town.

Yes, you can play multiple cartridge copies on the same 3ds.
Yes, you can play a cartridge and a digital copy on the same 3ds.
But you would need a second 3ds to move things from one town to the other.

Or a friend! Which is what I do.

If it's not a ton of stuff, you can shift things by visiting a friend's town from your town A, dropping stuff, then visiting from town B and picking it up. But yeah, generally you're going to need at least occasional access to a 2nd 3DS to actually go back and forth. Especially if you want to move a villager from one town to the other. But it's not essential, and it can be a lot of fun!

one thing to know that no-one told me, in regards to streetpassing: whichever town you save last is the one you will streetpass out. So, if you have been working hard on the mayor's house in town A and you expect to streetpass, make sure you save that game last! also, after streetpassing, the first game you open will claim all the streetpass information, including HHA houses (yay!) and unwanted villagers (boo!).
