Constructive Criticism only please!
<span style="display:block;text-align:center">Note: I'm having trouble getting new fonts to show up on the fonts list for Gimp, so please, if anyone has advice then that would be greatly appreciated...

It's pretty good for a first signature. There doesn't look like there's much involving your render though. When you look at it, your attention is immediately drawn to the center or to the bottom right, because of the contrast and because that is where stuff is happening in the signature.

You wanna try and include your actual render (Link) in with all that's happening around him, so the attention is placed on Link instead of the effects. Although the effects are pretty good.

Another Thing, the border seems a little bit big, but you may want to keep it like that. The text color doesn't really match with a lot but, that's all good because it IS your first signature.

^ Hope that's Good enough CC. :p

I like everything but the font. o:
You could make link bigger so only his torso up is showing and you could put your name in the big empty space, but that's just my opinion

Nooby question: How do you fit a large image in Gimp?

For your first I think that's brilliant!

Great for a first sig. Good lightsource, nice blend of colors. The only thing lacking is the text. I dont use Gimp's text tool. I use either flamingtext.com or cooltext.com and do it there, then copy it and make it its own layer in the sig, and i properly size it and color it

I think you should increase the opacity of the render, Like pootman said, your attention isn't immediately drawn to the render.
