This is my first signature

Well at this point, its not really that I'm horrible because I'm generally bad at making siggys, its just that i barley know how to use GIMP to its full potential.

Once i know how to use GIMP, I think i will be able to produce much better sigs

Yup.


Keep at it. As bad as they turn out, the better the next ones will be by a tiny bit. I would suggest you use PlanetRenders.net if you want to find decent renders (if you don't already). Also, when you save your signatures, save them as .png instead of .jpg (ex: Signature_01.png). Maybe try to find some GIMP signature tutorials (even though I could never find any good ones). If you follow those guidelines, I'm sure you'll improve some bit.
