Hey! So I've been thinking (for a few months now) of getting a new Nintendo handheld. Not sure if I should go for the new 2DS XL or 3DS XL. I'm leaning more towards the 2DS. I'm definitely going to get New Leaf and will probably also get a pokemon game. I'll make a separate thread about different options for those. Thanks!

UPDATE: I got the 2DS XL in black&turquoise. So far, I'm really liking it! I also bought a physical of Pok?mon Ultra Sun and am currently downloading the digital New Leaf (which I'm SUPER excited for!!) Thanks for the suggestions :)

If you don’t have either, I would go for a New Nintendo 3DS XL, as that one will get you the most games and services at a reasonable price.

However, if you already have a system that can play 3D games, I would recommend going for the New Nintendo 2DS XL. I got one myself about a month or two ago so that I can trade Pokemon between my games and don’t have to rely on others for it. :D

A new 2DS is cheaper and from what I?ve gathered it?s not much different from the new 3ds you just can?t switch on the 3d mode (which isn?t really ever used many games) so it?s not like you?re missing out on much, if you?re not super keen on spending a little more money than you need to I?d say go with the new 2DS but if you can I?d recommend getting the new 3ds. I personally don?t like how the new 2DS is designed the slight differences from the new 3ds make it look strange to me

You're saying that you want a new Nintendo handheld so I'm assuming that you only have a system from the Nintendo DS family now? So basically the difference between the two is just that the 3DS has 3D and the 2DS does not. But aside from that they're a 100% identical in terms of features. So if you don't really care about the 3D then go for the 2DS.

I personally have every system from the 3DS family except for the 2DS line but despite that I never actually use 3D. It also doesn't help that many newer games disable the 3D feature altogether to use that processing power on different aspects.

I would personally recommend the New 2DS XL rather than the New 3DS XL. For one thing, New 2DS XLs are $40 to $50 dollars cheaper than New 3DS XLs depending on whether you go for a special model like the Pikachu New 2DS XL or an ordinary New 2DS XL. With that amount of savings, you could buy a game if you wanted to. Despite having a 3DS since the days of the original models of 3DS, I've only ever turned on the 3D function maybe 5 or less times. A lot of games just don't make much use of it, and of those that do, few are all that worthwhile.

Tbh I have a new 3ds and I hate the 3d feature, I never use it. Otherwise I think new 2ds is better!

I'd recommend the cheapest option whichever that is.
Unless you don't mind playing previously released games and a shorter life support for the 3ds console I'd recommend buying a switch as that is where the new games will be coming. Don't expect too many new 3ds games but I'd you don't mind that, a 3DS XL would be best choice.

Well crap I accidentally voted for 3DS, it should say 6-4 for 2DS.

I've got a 3DS XL, and despite being very amazed by the 3D feature, I got bored of it pretty fast, and you will most likely grow a headache after a while. And really, it's only "cool" in the beginning, I haven't turned on the 3D feature for god knows how long. :p
So go buy yourself a 2DS! Unless you're very fascinated with 3D and know you will remain so, of course.

Either one of the XL versions has two major perks over a regular 2ds/3ds.

1. Built in amiibo reader on the touch screen (the regular models require a separate purchase of an NFC reader)
2. Super Nintendo Virtual Console (if you'e into the classics)

So either way, it boils down to "Am I going to make use of the 3D in games?" in my opinion. Whichever of the two you think suits you, is the console you should spring for. :3

I have a New Nintendo 3DS XL and recently got my girlfriend a New Nintendo 2DS XL. Allow me to throw down a few extra points of interest:

Advantage: New 3DS XL:
- Longer stylus
- A bit bulkier for those with larger hands
- 3D capabilities for appropriate games, if you are into that
- Generic gray color looks a lot better than the teal/black or orange/white combos

Advantage: New 2DS XL:
- Significantly lighter
- The "clicking" sound when the system is opened is less pronounced
- Home button off to side (instead of under bottom screen). This means there is less space on the bottom of the system so you may be less likely to hit power button (which is still on bottom of system)
- Cheaper

When I brought the New 2DS XL home, I repeatedly joked that my girlfriend could just have the New 3DS XL that I had...but I am happy with both systems for different reasons. They are both garbage in that they do not come with a charging cable.

One thing that's worth taking into consideration is that on any New 3DS model variant (excluding New 2DS), the microSD card is far tougher to access. Should you feel the need to upgrade the storage capacity, you actually need to bring your own Phillips 00 screwdriver to actually detach the back cover hiding that slot.

I had a gamestop employee I was friends with insert the micro SD card after I finished purchasing the system and the micro sd and we lost one of the screws for the back cover putting it back on x.x

That last part is actually really, really weird. Most New Nintendo 3DSXL and New Nintendo 2DSXL systems come WITH the charger in the box nowadays. Do you remember when you purchased those and what models they are? I just remember buying a New Nintendo 2DSXL about a month or two ago, but a grey charger came with it.

Yeah... I've seen some reviews and I thought the the 2DS came with the charging cable and the 3DS didn't. I agree with you that it is a bit weird.

I might be shooting in the dark, but I'm wondering if the topic creator actually own any DSi model. They come with the same exact charger that's designed for every 3DS variation.

Having a new 2ds XL since.. September last year I think? I'd say it does its job, especially if you're on a budget and I agree it's dumb to pay more for just the 3D when you can just turn it off lol. Although the inward screen edges/screens gets dusty way more and the buttons are a bit mushy. I do love the lid for games though, always had the trouble of the games popping out whenever I had them in a New Nintendo 3DS XL.

They are kinda cheap to buy, and I had an employee at the store where I bought them to help me unscrew it, and later learning myself.
