You can find info on what bells are and how to earn/use them here and here, but to give you a brief rundown, bells (also called TBT/TBT bells) are earned primarily by posting in eligible boards and threads here on the forums! Posting anywhere except the Introduction Board*, TBT Marketplace, Museum Shop, The Basement, and certain threads in Brewster's Café will earn you bells; the longer your post, the more bells you'll earn!
* I believe you earned bells for making your thread here in the Introduction Board, but you won't earn bells for making regular posts (replying to others' threads or your own) in this board.
