excuse my double post, but if ya have a minute or two, i just wrote this up... very, very interesting:
All For 5 Bucks
I'm sure many TBTers have already downloaded the final version of the Wii's internet browser, which was released today, but you may or may not be aware that there are still quite a few Wii owners unable to download the internet channel. I am not talking Wii owners with dial-up connections or no internet connection at all. Certain routers, provided by certain ISPs (internet service providers), such as Comcast and Time Warner / RoadRunner, are currently not compatible with the Wii, which does not allow Wii owners with these routers to access the Virtual Console shop, and now the internet channel. Comcast is the largest high-speed internet provider in the U.S., serving over 11 million people. Although a bit smaller, nearly 5 and a half million Americans' ISP is Roadrunner.
I myself am one of these unlucky people, owning both a Wii and receiving my internet through
one of these routers, provided to me by my ISP. I was very disappointed when I first attempted accessing the internet with Wii, only to find out it was not compatible with my router (it works just fine with DS, so I was in for quite the surprise).
If you read the post I linked to above, you'll see Nintendo says that they are doing all they can "to determine what can be done to get the Wii console working with these routers." I have owned my Wii for one week short of 5 months, and Nintendo has provided no help in getting my Wii online, nor anyone else's in the same predicament that I'm in.
Now, don't get me wrong, Nintendo usually provides fantastic customer service and is very good in dealing with any issues that arise. But here's something to think about:
Nintendo did months of testing on the Wii, and seeing as how the online features are something they're really emphasizing as one of the Wii's key selling points, it's a given that the most common routers were tested with it - meaning they knew these routers provided by Comcast and Roadrunner would not work with Wii. And now, 5 months after Wii's release, when the final version of the internet browser is available, has anything been done? No. I've been crossing my fingers for months that I'll be able to get online with my Wii, but no luck yet.
There is no way Nintendo will continue to ignore the problem at hand... and I think they'll finally release 'the fix' to the problem in about 3 months time. Why's that, you ask? That will be July. And after June 30th, if you want the Wii system, you have to pay $5 to download it. This would be really scummy on Nintendo's part, but I just have a feeling this may happen. Let's hope it doesn't happen, and let's hope Nintendo cleans up the mess it has created; but until then, all we can do is cross our fingers.
