Newb ? about Friend Codes and Traveling

Hi, I am not new to AC but I have never tried to add friends and travel before. I have added a few FC from here and have received PM's from those users saying that they have added me.

Now here is my question. You can't visit anyone unless their gate is open, so other than running to the train station and connecting to the internet every so often, is there a way to know when a friend is on and their gate is open?

When the orange light blinks and a friend comes online, I run to the station and try to travel, but apparently no one ever has their gate open.

So do you just have to get lucky?

Well, you could set a time for you or someone else to open gates. Rarely do peopl just open there gates just cause.
Also if you add people as bestfriends. You can chat them when they are online so you can ask to open gates and such.
