I haven't seen any footage or mention of the diving feature that was introduced in NL. And there's so much water around the island on the maps that I feel like it's going to be included.

Do you think it will come back?

i sure hope so! every time characters got really close to the water i hoped we'd see one jump into the water. i remember a clip where a villager seemed to be running headfist to the ocean at full speed... only to abruptly stop and lie down on some furniture haha.

i don't see why diving shouldn't come back. but in directs and advertising for series nintendo likes to focus on the newer features. the museum's aquarium section is so huge this time it would be strange if we weren't able to dive! if diving does make a return i hope it comes back with improvements. it was sometimes very difficult to guess where exactly you should dive to catch up with a shadow.

I think it?ll be one of those things Nintendo is keeping secret. Maybe they?ve changed the format of it or something. But some animals in the aquarium looked like they were scooting along the bottom of the tank so I would imagine we?ll dive to get those.

It'd feel weird not to have diving given all four sides are surrounded by water in this game. Though seeing how the Critterpedia didn't list Deep Sea Creatures, it's possible it may not be in or it may be patched in later.

The mechanics were a little funky in New Leaf. Accounting for depth perception from a third person view is hard. I did LOVE all the new creatures we could discover though! I want to to come back!

I feel like it's not included because it would be really difficult for Nintendo to put a natural "boundary" into the game. Since it's a deserted island it would be weird to have a buoy or those swimming barriers to create the boundary. And it would be clunky to have your character not be able to swim any further outside a boundary in open water.

Can anyone think of a solution to this?

They could be added into the fishing section though and renamed to just sea creatures. Or we could have seen an incomplete bit there where they?ve deliberately not shown us the diving section because it?ll give something away.

This is very true. I guess the option would be just to have an invisible wall. Or to totally overhaul how we dive. Maybe it becomes a side scrolling thing instead.

I thought I saw flippers for sale in the direct? Maybe while talking to Kicks? I doubt they would solely be a fashion item since they're not really made for walking around.

There is a very simple solution. You could have deeper colored water that is blocked off by an invisible wall, or even have a text box pop up that reads something like "The current here is too strong to continue." Various games do similar things.

it wouldn’t make sense if diving were removed especially since we now live on an island - i’m hoping that it’ll still be in the game even though it wasn't shown in the direct; the direct focused mainly on the new aspects which would explain why diving and a lot of older features weren’t included

I honestly don't know why they would take this away. It feels like it makes even more sense to have swimming than we did before. We'll be on an island! But we simply don't know either way.

I guarrantee it will come back. I think it might work differently than previous games, but definitely will be in the game. Something tells me that it will be related to the dock somehow, like you will be able to build a boat and go fishing in deeper waters or something.

I'm sure in the Direct there was a scene where they were wearing a swimsuit - I could be wrong but I doubt they'd take away such a huge aspect of the game!

They already introduced so many new things to the game in the Direct that they probably want to leave the rest to us, or introduce it in the lead up to the release :)

There is also the possibility that we will be restricted to snorkeling and short diving, which would limit how far we could go, and as Ossiran said, there could be a color barrier, or text that lets us know we can't swim too far from shore.

They said DEEP DIVE in the direct so I'm wondering if that was an Easter egg?

‧˚₊*̥(∗︎*⁰͈꒨⁰͈)‧˚₊*̥ So like... Can we deep dive now? I hope we can paddle and also swim in rivers and paddle in ponds too!

They aren't going to show every little thing in the game, so I'm sure this is one of the activities that just didn't make the cut for the direct/commercials. It seems as though they were focusing on new things, rather than established activities. I'm sure we'll be able to dive.

I hope it comes back, with a major overhaul. I loved jumping in and swimming, but it was also very clunky.

I will be very surprised if it is not returning.

I'd be surprised and a little sad if it doesn't return, but I believe Nintendo is holding back a lot of things that are new and are returning. We will just have to wait and see, but I do hope it will return because it was fun to do it in the late Summer, as that was one of my favorite activities to do then.
