No NFC reader, can I still play?

Okay so I just got back from the store and bought HHD and a pack of cards. Buying the NFC reader totally slipped my mind and no stores I checked have onw. Can I still play or do I have to wait until I can order the reader? (I have an old 3DS so it isn't built-in)

The NFC reader is only to use the Amiibo Cards in the game. You can still play you just wont be able to use the cards in the game
