Uh... you don't have to do anything to have it copyrighted. It's already copyrighted right after you make it. The only reason people register things is to make sure someone doesn't say they are the ones who originally did it... it's just more proof.

Not really. Its to protect it from being misused. To get an actual copyright you need to pay $30 dollars (I think, may be 50.) for it. After that you own it all your life and 20-50 years after you die. While the copyright is in affect people have to pay you to use it if the owner so chooses. Thats why restaurants have their own birthday songs, so they don't have to pay to use the original.
