er, I thought this might be the best place to put it ^^; What's your opinion on using bases for art? To clarify, I mean using bases that have been previously drawn by someone else.
don't try to make a profit off of it (unless you made said base yourself). that's it. even if you bought it from someone else and they... "allow" you to resell it... that's still super skeevy and sort of defeats the purpose. and ofc, always give credit, as mentioned. that's about it.
I don't mind bases for adopts, but I'm not a fan of bases for selling in shops...even if you made it yourself. The art doesn't seem so unique if you use one....
Bases are generally used for things you plan on drawing a lot of (e.g. pixel art, chibi adoptables) and it's fair enough that you don't want to be drawing the same thing 20 times over, so IMO they're perfectly fine
For me, bases are nice and all and yeah with all the credit to the original artist and permission but tbh I don't really like it when people use bases...(usually if they're trying to make a profit) It might just be that some people who use bases...their style doesn't exactly look uh very nice using a base, like sorta messy looking or the base looks better than what they added to it orz
I can agree with the comment about pixel bases tho
but really it might just be how the person is using the base for me because if the person using the base is using it well (like it looks nice) and for profit I don't think I would mind compared to a person sorta lazily using one for quick profit (or at least it looks that way for some people...)
I think the reason why people selling bases allow them for adopts is because the base/art isn't the focus of an adopt. The focus is it's design, rather than the art itself (which is why they're usually not allowed to be used for commissions). When you buy an adopt, you're not buying for the art but for the character and outfit.
I have an adopt shop in the Museum Shop sub-forum using bases I purchased with RLC. I use these bases because I use a mouse and Photoshop to do all of my art, which doesn't give me the same line stability or accuracy as other digital artists. I can't draw bodies or facial features very well with a mouse, but I can make some pretty cute outfit and character designs using just the basic brush and eraser in Photoshop. My adopts aren't proof of my art skill, but can show my imagination and designing skill (which is why I personalize them as "Dokibon", with their own set of unique traits).
In terms of profit, I've made much more from my other art shop which doesn't use anyone else's bases.
I think bases are great and helpful! I think it's totally okay to use for things like personal use (reference of own characters and such) or adoptables (if the base was made by someone else and they allow the buyer/user to use said base for adoptables) while also giving proper credit.
I wouldn't like it if someone used someone else's base for their commissions. Though, I think it's okay if the person uses their own base for it!
I myself use bases to make quicker references of my characters or maybe a design I have in mind and want to quickly draw on it. I basically use them for my own personal use. It makes things easier and very helpful to me, in that sense!
I'm not really a fan of artists using another person's bases. More often than not, the style of the artist doesn't match the style of the base (at least from what I've seen) unless it's a pixel base, but some even mix that up too.
i dont have anything against bases, but i'd only use them for practice. if i need to work on clothes and hair, then i'd use a base because laziness. if im working on legit drawings, then i wouldnt use a base. it just doesnt feel good when i finish a drawing but i know the base/center of it wasnt drawn by me
Using it to improve your art is fine, as long as you give credit. I don't really agree with making money off them though since you couldn't have drawn that piece without the base.
