Opinions on Tom Nook

So… how do we feel about the Tycoon Raccoon?
I’m really curious, because I honestly have very mixed feelings about him.

I like him! I don’t get why he gets so much hate. The only thing I don’t like is why he decided to make it that you have to get another person to come to your town in PG and Wild World to get Nookington’s.

I think he's cool. We will see how he is in the next game. I wonder if he will be a little more difficult with us. I liked how he was in WildWorld.

I think most people just like to hate on him for the memes. Nintendo played into it with a few jokes (i.e. the King Nook costume and the LT bath), but he’s actually a very generous and wholesome character. I haven’t seen any arguments against him that actually held any water…

— unless the theory that he is actually a trickster tanuki like in mythology is true, and he steals everyone’s money by selling them literal leaves that have the illusion of being something else, so everyone is sitting in their empty homes filled with rotting leaves, scammed, while tanuki is living it up with affluence. ;p

He’s okay in NL and in NH, but I wasn’t a fan of him in PG and WW. he forces you to join the HRA.

I think he does in NH too, but at least I don’t think the letters are as obnoxious

I don't have any beef with him. And.. raccoons are cute. (I know raccoon dogs are different and not even related)

I wonder if he will be tougher on us in the future...

I like him, his previous outfit in New Leaf makes him look like a church pastor.

However, he annoyed me in Population Growing back when I played it for the first time in Christmas of 2018. He told me not to goof off while I was working just because he wasn't watching me.

I think Tom Nook is actually a pretty nice guy! Well, at least in the newer games...
I think that the reason people hate him is his greediness and his love for money.
That is based on the Tanuki, or "Japanese Racoon Dog" They are tricksters, and their "balls" represent financial success.
Sound familiar?

I think he’s quite kind. His friendship with Sable might be complicated, but despite a rough phase in his past, he’s overall a good person.

He’s also a cute chubby guy. If he were a human character, I’d have a crush on him lol.

i’ve always been pretty neutral about him. i’ve never disliked him or thought of him as a bad or greedy character, but he’s also never been a favourite of mine. i think he’s a staple part of animal crossing, and the games honestly wouldn’t be the same without him, but that’s about it haha

that being said, he’s definitely one of the most interesting npcs imo, and his backstory has always fascinated me; especially his past with redd, and his friendship/relationship with sable. sable’s dialogue about their past together was one of my favourite parts of wild world, and i’ve always been a little sad that it hasn’t been brought up in any of the subsequent games so far. i also love the theory that tom and the nooklings aren’t actually related, but that he took them under his wing and gave them a chance, anyways.

despite what he was like in the original animal crossing, wild world, and city folk, tom nook has always been a generous character. money and doing well has always been important to him, but he’s always been a generous and patient landlord of sorts for us— he gives our character a place to stay, and lets us take our time in paying off our loans. i’ve said this before, but i’d love to have a landlord like him irl lol

i think he’s a vastly misunderstood character at times. @/boring has made a couple of threads on here about him that greatly changed the way that i feel about him— he’s still not a favourite character of mine, but he’s one of the characters that i appreciate the most. he’s a good dude

Tom Nook honestly will forever have a special place in my heart. He is definitely my favourite NPC in Animal Crossing, over the whole entire series. For one, he doesn’t even give you any interests on paying your loan, and you have however long you want to take paying it. If that was the case in real life my god, it’d be a dream. Also he’s explained his backstory (in Wild World) and even though he’s had it tough as a Tanuki, he still wants to help Timmy and Tommy by allowing them to have a job in his shop which then they end up taking over (from New Leaf onwards).

I also don’t understand why he gets so much hate, but I love him. I have many plushies of him, he’s cute and has such a cute but simple design. He’s been part of the series since day one and has grown and become so successful, so proud of you Mr. Nook Thank you for making this post, Tom Nook definitely needs more appreciation from the Animal Crossing Community, he is for sure a gem.

I love him! I find him pretty funny. I don't know for the dialogues in English but in French, he uses strong language and it's very nice and fun to read him, like he is very official and you too. I like his love for money. I love money too haha.

I never had a problem with Tom Nook. I don't have any special liking of him, but I don't dislike him. He's a little bossy and grouchy in the Gamecube Animal Crossing at first, but so were all of the characters in that game, honestly. Everyone mellowed out in future games, even/especially Mr. Resetti. And as others have pointed out, Tom Nook is actually helping you a ton when you show up in a new town, not having made any previous arrangements for lodging, and doesn't charge interest on your home loan and lets you pay it back whenever. I don't think he ever once comes after you to pay it back at any time, he patiently waits for you to do it whenever you feel like it. He's just being genuinely helpful, I think.

And I love in New Leaf when he sings you the song of his people. That made me laugh. XD

i've grown to like tom nook actually! i know the whole joke about him is that he's a money hungry loan shark that will get you if you don't pay him money and all but he's genuinely a pretty cool landlord! i mean, he gives you a house and basically just says "lol pay me back when you can lol) not to mention, he has the most interesting lore among most of the NPCS. his relationship with sable, redd, etc.. was always very interesting to me! regardless, i don't think he's the crook or the bad guy that everyone says he is, at least in the later games.

now LYLE... i think if there's anybody who should get the hate, it's this weasel.

I’m not really a fan of him. I don’t like how he, Timmy, and Tommy follow you around the store. They are annoying and it just gets in the way. It’s not like you can actually steal anything, so I really don’t see a point?

I miss when he used to be meaner. He’s always been a pretty stand up guy but he used to have a bit of a mean streak that I found funny. I guess that could be said about most of the franchise…
