I am a collector and my PS1 looks like the day it was bought so I can assure you I have cases, stands, protectors, every console I stop using gets a silicone case around it for full protection etc.
I own
Small 3DS pearl white - no signs of paint going off.
New 3DS monster hunter 4U - no signs of paint going off
Monster Hunter 3DS generations bought on the 16th this month, I opened it yesterday and there was a small part of paint going off. Inside of the 3DS not outside, anyone else noticed this with their newer 3DS?

I've only had 1 new 3ds (the one I use), and it came perfect. It may have been chipped when it was being made or when it was getting boxed.

If you would have the time, call Nintendo and ask them.

Now, paint wearing is normal with 3DS. It usually comes off around the bottom bumps, which its supposed to. It also might lose paint when you drop it or something.

Nintendo got worse with customer service and this chip wasn't here before.
Noticed it yesterday right under the screen... somewhere I obviously don't really touch since there are no buttons there.
My 3DS has not dropped a single time I take great care of my consoles since I collect ones from the 90s.

My original 3DS has paint chipping issues as well, but considering the game card slot is defective as well, it is the least of my worries at the moment.

My Fire Emblem 3ds paint is chipping... mainly because my nails dig into it. I'm accustomed to pressing keys with the base of my thumb.

lmao you should see the old 3ds i had, the paint is chipping off so much that you can see the original black plastic color (the 3ds used to be red btw) also the analog is just a modified nub at this point, not to mention all the scratches it has, also the huge crack it has on the side. poor ol sparky looks like he's been through world war 2

thats why mine has a case lmao

a case wouldnt have helped him, not even the lord can protect him from the trials of time XD

mine is reeeaaally good, its like an inch of tough foam. I tripped while holding it once and it flew across the room and was perfectly fine

I never had issues like this with any of my 3DS, even the d-pad on the original still looks perfect (d-pad paint chipping off was a common issue back then). I think there might be just dirt or really solid dust trapped in that specific, hinge portion of your new 3DS XL that you hadn't noticed or realized before you cleaned it (so it scratched that portion or paint wore off a bit). Since as a collector, you take care of your things. It's just probably accidental that won't happen again soon. Don't worry.

lol my original 3DS was bought brand new and I've played it so much that all the paint has worn off on the bottom, leaving two hand-shaped black marks on the bottom. you could do worse.

My new 3DS XL, which is about a year old, has some large paint chipping on the underside of it. Probably from rubbing against my pants pockets all the time. I carry it everywhere.

My black New 3DS XL came out of the box with a little scratch beside the D-Pad. I honeslty couldn't care less, but I understand how annoying it would be for any collector. :/
