Does anyone think there would be a new Paper Mario game for the Switch? They've been making a game for every console since the Nintendo64 so I'm hoping and assuming they may make one for the Switch. The Switch is my favorite console that Nintendo has made since the GameCube. Although I'm hoping for a new Paper Mario game, I really hope it is NOT like Sticker Star and Color Splash. I'd be happy with a new game that's like the first two games and a great story like the third game or if they just imported the first three games onto the Switch.

Unfortunately it WILL be like Sticker Star and Color Splash if it DOES happen. Nintendo and Intelligent Systems recently stated the future of the franchise would be based on whether or not they could come up with new paper themed gimmicks.

Plus Game Xplain did an interview with the woman in charge of series asking if they would ever consider making a classic style Paper Mario RPG ever again she basically told them "No" in the rudest possible way...

Honestly, I love me some Paper Mario but I hated Sticker Star so much that, not only did I sell it, but I refused to play Color Splash. As long as Intelligent Systems is taking this attitude, I am against new Paper Mario titles coming out. :/

I think it's so silly that they've abandoned the writing and charm of the previous games. When you think of Paper Mario do you think of game mechanics or do you thinking of the whimsical story? It's the latter, right?

I can't get over how bad Sticker Star was. I didn't even bother with Color Splash.

PM64 and TTYD were such gems, it's a shame they can't just remaster what they already had perfect. I would not object to a Paper Mario on Switch, Nintendo has been doing pretty decent lately.

A friend of mine once told me he thinks that Paper Mario was perfect for the 3DS. If Nintendo and Intelligent Systems were to close out the 3DS with a port of Paper Mario 64, not only would it sell like hotcakes, it would also show them just how much the original RPG style is loved and revered.

I'd buy it.

Recently stated? I recall them saying they wouldn't around the time Color Splash was released, but mainly because the people who worked on Color Splash haven't worked on a Paper Mario game before so they didn't understand how it should be made. I believe this was the same video/interview I'm thinking of where you mention Game Xplain, but I may be wrong.

I believe sometime before the Switch came out, there was a new Nintendo director or something like that and because of him, better games have been coming out. So, hopefully this way of thinking will also go with a way better Paper Mario release.

Ok so about three years ago may not exactly be recent, but then again, I dunno how Nintendo changes their stance on this stuff. I don't remember which video it was. I just know Arlo mentioned the video one of his videos (I believe it was Mario & Luigi Can't Replace Paper Mario). Her response was basically "You wan't an RPG? Go play Mario & Luigi!"

And the Color Splash team was a bunch of greenhorns to Paper Mario? That kind of explains a lot. Still though, regardless of who's in charge right now at Nintendo, I feel they need to revisit the full fledged RPGs of the Paper Mario series (whether through ports as I mentioned earlier or just sitting down and playing through a game or two) to discover what made the games so great.

I mean Super Paper Mario dared to be different and, to a degree, I feel that it worked. But even still, there's no replacement for how the series started and why we love it so much. While I've never played TTYD itself, I have played the Virtual Console version of the N64 original...and I have to say I can see why it's such a beloved title.

If they do decide to take a more RPG approach for Paper Mario on the Switch...and I do mean going back to the story driven, party member filled, quirky cutscene roots...then definitely sign me up.

Given how poorly received the recent Paper Mario games have been, you'd think that Intelligent Systems would return to its N64 roots and do a game like that again.

If the Wii U got a Paper Mario game then the Switch will get one eventually as well, probably as a complete surprise. But I personally don't have any predictions on what it will be like. I don't mind it either because I played every game in the series and I like all of them. Hate on me all you want but yes I enjoyed Sticker Star and I enjoyed Color Splash even more!

If Intelligent Systems were to stick to the formula that Sticker Star and Color Splash adhered, then they need to consider whether or not the battle system is worth keeping. They could either revamp it in a very satisfying manner like the first two entries did, or abolish it entirely.

My gripe with the last two installments is that the boring battle system is designed to be something you want to actively avoid triggering, unless you're running low on coins and/or specific types of consumable stickers/cards. Even Color Splash's hammer scraps stop being an incentive around halfway through the game, since you'll hardly run out of paint at that point.

I'd say if they want to take that route AND keep the battle system, that a revamp would be a major necessity. My main reason for hating Sticker Star was the battle system. Since you had to use stickers to attack and Mario didn't have access to a non sticker based jump or hammer attack, the attack system was entirely item based.

Run out of stickers? Backtrack and get more. The potential for forced backtracking, I feel really made the game longer then it had to be. All in all though, I wouldn't mind if they took the traditional RPG route and just penciled a paper themed gimmick in each new game.

The classic fans get our RPG style game and the people who were introduced to the series via Sticker Star and/or Color Splash get their papery gimmicks as well. Who knows? Maybe that attempt at a win win situation could work out.

You've never played TTYD? It's pretty much like N64's version, but MUCH MORE improved. If you ever find a way to play it, I highly recommend doing so.

Besides people who worked on Paper Mario Color Splash were new to the series, it probably doesn't help that the creator (or the one that basically built up the first two games, the ones we know and love) left around the production of Super Paper Mario.

This video explains a lot about many things and the possible future for Paper Mario. I suggest giving it a watch and letting me know what you think.

You like what you like. I'm glad you were able to enjoy those games while I wasn't able to. I have all the games and consoles for each of them. I've finished all of them besides Color Splash (maybe finished like 15%?)... I'm having dificulty getting into it because of the battle system, but I do want to finish it one day, especially if I'm able to finish the very frustrating Sticker Star (I had to do the final boss many times because of the horrible battle mechanics).

I'm personally not a fan of the whole paper aesthetic even though it is called Paper Mario, but I would be more fine with it if it was a game like PM64 and/or PMTTYD. I'm more attached to the style that was shown in PMTTYD than the new aesthetic they're going for, but I'm not sure if it's because I'm being biased or if it's just what I actually like.
Regardless of not really caring for the paper aesthetic, I honestly don't care what the game looks like as long it goes back to its roots. It could look like PM64 and I'd still be happy with it as long as it's brand new with what all the fans are looking for.

The battle system was just terrible for Sticker Star and Color Splash. I agree that it's just a bunch of forced backtracking (which is what made the final boss in Sticker Star so frustrating for me). I had the best stickers you could get and everything else I could fit in my limited inventory (which also made it really bad) and I still had the worse time. I wanted to break my 3DS out of frustration.

I never finished Sticker Star before selling it. After a while I'd pretty much had enough :/ I do have a Gamecube, but I'm in the process of moving right now. Maybe after I settle in my new place and get a few things taken care of, I'll see if I can find a decent price for a used copy in good condition.

I actually think I've seen the particular video. I do watch Arlo on a regular basis, but I haven't seen everything he's done. I'll have to check his channel and see if the red line denoting watch time on that video is showing on it.

Pretty much how I feel about the situation haha. I?ve heard that apparently due to the backlash over the original characters taking more precedence over Mario and the gang, they?ve stuck to the formula of the two newer games. Idk how much truth there is to that, though.

Huh, that's interesting. I've personally never heard of that... all I've ever heard was how much fans love the partners and how they want them to bring them back, so I'm not sure how much truth is to that either.

I think it was more directed to SPM, which I suppose is a valid complaint, but imo even in Paper Mario games the formula of “Peach is kidnapped by Bowser and Mario rescues her” is pretty tired.

But yeah this came from GameFaqs and anything said there unsourced should be taken with a grain of salt lol.

Oh, alright. Sounds like a good idea.
I remember I ended up scratching my PMTTYD disc when I was really young and it wouldn't work anymore, but luckily I was able to get a new one easily because it was still around that era of GameCube.
You should definitely let me know what you think of PMTTYD whenever you finish it.

Oh, SPM makes sense then. I also do agree about that repetitive story, which is why I thought SPM was refreshing (and somewhat PMTTYD since it wasn't Bowser who did it that time).

I don't blame you Sticker Star's final boss was pretty dumb...
