Well I thought I'd go ahead and post this, just to show this work in progress in a day's time, around 7 hours. Don't critique it yet, guys, :p it's still very much being worked on, and this isn't the final copy. I'll post about three more of the picture coming together. The final one will be sprayed with fixative, so the scanner can't play it's dirty tricks and make it look all grainy and brighter. Seriously, I don't know why it makes it look grainy and pencily. It would look like that if you had a magnifying glass, yes.
Perhaps, look at them from a distance...They're sideways again, but the finished one won't be sideways in a frame: it will look natural.

I'll post, if I can get it, a sideways picture that is facing the computer screen if I can, for a better view.

1 hour into drawing, small bit of sketching is done to get initial look, eye is drawn to identify the subject easier. Eyes make all the difference. Would you look the same without eyes?

About 2-3 hours into Paul's face and hair. I begin to give the picture more detail.

3-4 hours into drawing, it's finally coming together, the top portion of the face is.

I made the picture in gray scale on the scanner, so that way that sepia tone wouldn't be there. It's looking better.

What I've been working on recently. The picture is about 2/3 done or so. The lips will probably take some time.

I darkened the photo to make it look more like the picture did before it was scanned.

I've finally figured out my scanner. I edited the photo using the control panel on my printer, and made it look much more like the drawing, as far as shading goes. I hope I fixed the head a bit. As far as the eyes and nose, you can't nitpick at those, as it would really ruin the picture if I tried to erase them and replace them a short distance over on other shading.
About 9-10 hours so far. It may look a bit elongated due to the fact that the picture was drawn sideways on the paper, and flipping it, I think, may have distorted it, but I dunno. Besides the eyes and nose not being exactly perfect, what do you think about it so far? I'm getting close to finishing it up; I just have to shade and pick around at a few spots to enhance it.

Well right now it only looks like he has one nostril on his nose. Other then that everything is looking good. Also I liked your clever title.

Now look at it, it's upright. It's supposed to be darker, but oh well. Scanner, the scanner. Those lines in his nostril that are pencil marks, you can't see in the drawing either. The scanner picked up every little detail too.

If you're going for a balloon type of head, you're doing great!

The head doesn't look proportionate and the eyes are kind of messed up. Try making yourself a grid of small thin lines as your reference points.

I think it needs more of a cheek bone because the face look really narrow towards the bottom. The anatomical left eye is a bit higher than the right too.

Other than that it looks good.

It'll just be a matter of shading on the side to get rid of the balloon look; I haven't really started much on the final coat of shading. As for the eyes, just more shading around them, some adjustments, and they should look better. The nose has been fixed a bit too.

I really appreciate the comments though. I may try gridding for the first time on my next picture; so far they've all been freehand drawn. I'll need tracing paper as well for that. But I'll need the eyes of other people to help me direct the picture in where it needs to go. That's really my biggest problem in portrait drawing so far is just getting the proportions and initial sketch right. But thanks again guys.

I won't be some whiny little baby about it if you tell me something isn't straight. Critique all you want, but critique the drawing not the drawer, or anything that would otherwise be "troll comments".

Don't spend too much time on the lips. You know what happened last time:

I'll try to avoid that mistake. :p

His head is just kind of heart shaped, and his nose is fat, I would do the grid in your next drawing, as you said above.

Do Albert Einstein.

I will if I can find a decent enough quality pic, which I should be able to. I got some grid paper, and it's the size of the print out, so hopefully it should work. By the way, I've fixed some of the head, and I'll work on it more later. That, what you see now, isn't there so much anymore. Like I said, it was a matter of shading more on the outside and giving it a defined shape. I won't finish it until the head is really almost perfect in shape. But then again, I sort of consider these drawings as practice. They are what they are. For my later ones, I'm going to try to spice it up a bit maybe, using artistic effects, straighten out the picture the way I want it to be before I draw, and just try to make it look better overall. Once again, thanks for the comments.

I hope I fixed some minor problems, with the scanner outcome and the actual drawing...Like I said, I can't exactly fix the eyes and nose and the scanner may have distorted the picture a bit, (elongated a tad), simply because the picture was drawn sideways and I rotated it straight up using the scanner. Does it look any better at all than before?
