Sorry if this is obvious but I have never done this before so I have a few questions.

I plan on naming my Island and my human villagers in Japanese and I prefer the Japanese holiday items over my country's so I would rather play the Japanese version of the game.

If I set my Switch's region to Japan will I be able to play the Japanese version of the game in English with an European copy?

If I do change my Switch's region will it affect my Nintendo E-shop funds?

After reading the following link, I believe the answer to your question is "it depends."

1. If you purchase the digital copy from the Japanese eShop and set your Profile to Japan region, you'll be able to play the game with Japanese holiday items.. If the Japanese region game includes English, then yes, you can play it in English.

2. No, it won't affect your funds. You'll end up creating a second eShop account with a unique email address.

Thanks for taking your time to help me! I guess I won't get a physical copy then.

Make sure you research whether or not the Japan version includes an English soundtrack. If it does, you're fine. If it doesn't, then you won't be able to play it in English, at all.

The switch itself is region free, meaning that you can play the japanese physical version... but it will be in japanese.
This way you don't need to make another nintendo account, in case you want to go that way.

Do keep in mind that certain games come with english, but they're really rare (okami comes to mind, I got the game in japanese and since my switch is in english, the game recognizes the language and puts the game in english)

According to the Japanese eShop, the Japanese digital version of ACNH includes English, so you should be fine. Don't know if it's US English or European English though (or if New Horizons will even have two different Englishes like Pocket Camp.)

Be warned that depending on what country you live in your debit/credit card might not work on the Japanese eShop. I'm in the US and none of my cards were accepted. Paypal didn't work either. I got an error telling me to use a Japanese Credit Card. Don't know if cards from other regions will work.

I ended up having to pre-order my Japanese copy off Amazon instead because of this. They sell digital copies as well, but I went for physical so that I could have the bento box.

I went to the Japanese Amazon website and clicked on download code there. Will I get the download code immediately after pursache to pre-load it on my Switch?

I'm not sure how it works with the digital copy since I bought a physical one :(

Regional items/holidays

I am getting a Japanese physical copy of the game from Amazon... I also have a Japanese account set up on my switch for accessing their e-Shop. When I create my island, if I want Japanese items/holidays, do I need to first create it with the Japanese account, or is it specific to using a Japanese cartridge and the account doesn't matter? Excited to get started with my island, but wanting to do it properly so I don't have to restart.
