I'm thinking about getting my 1st Pokemon game for Switch, but am looking for your thoughts on which game would be better for me.

I'm a much bigger fan of the first two generations, which makes me lean towards Let's Go.

But I've also read that the gameplay for Let's Go is really simple and it doesn't take much gameplay hours to beat the game... making me think Sword & Shield might be the better pick.

On the other hand for Soerd & Shield, it's disappointing that quite a few of my favorite Gen 1 and especially Gen 2 Pokemon aren't even playable at all. Plus I'm not really a fan of DLC for unlocking the entire game... maybe I'm old school, but I pretty strongly believe that if I'm paying full price for a console game, I expect to get the full game... so on principle I won't buy the DLC for Sword & Shield, and it makes me feel like the main Sword & Shield game is only half a game, even though it costs 50% more than previous Pokemon games.

So, given all of that, I'd like to know which game you'd recommend? Thanks for helping me choose!

tbh i didn't like either that much

so like i still play pokemon shield every now and then if i'm really bored so i guess that one is better imo
then again i got the DLC for this and the most fun parts of the game are from that 🤔
and this game did take me like 2 days to complete so this one is a quick game too

i got lets go eevee and literally sold it again within 2 months, it was so bad i didn't even complete it
to be fair though, i never played the original pokemon game so that's probably why i wasn't as interested in this one

so if u did play the original then u should definately get lets go eevee/pikachu ^-^
and everyone i know that plays pokemon love the lets go games so it's probably just me that didn't lol

Cool, thanks for the advice. I've played Let's Go Pikachu one time... it was fun to play with a friend, but I'm worried the novelty might wear off. It seemed like no skill or strategy was required. To be fair... I've heard the same about sword & shield also, though... so maybe you're right. 🤔🤔

sword/shield obviously has its naysayers but, for what it's worth, i enjoyed it. then again, i also enjoyed SM and USUM when a lot of people didn't. maybe it's because ORAS was my first game, and i'm not a diehard fan, but still. obviously it has its flaws, and a fair few of them, but they weren't particularly hard for me to look past. i still play it a year on (granted that's using DLC features, but i'd be shiny hunting in the base game anyway) and had no major gripes with it. definitely preferred the crown tundra DLC storyline to the other two though, and hop is basically just a copy-paste (literally, in fact) of hau from USUM. i do think these games are a step down from those ones anyway, but. it's really up to you in the end.

I’ve been a fan since the gen 3 days and I’ve played all the games.

Let’s Go was ok but I personally got more out of Sword and Shield. Both suffer from a lot of newer game problems but Let’s go is just the same old Kanto story with a new coat of paint thrown on it. So, while it was fun it wasn’t anything new at the same time. Sword and Shield at least had new areas, a new story and new Pokémon to catch. The story wasn’t crazy good or anything but this is Pokémon after all. The DLC is also very worth it as it adds lots of additional content to the game.

I had maybe 20 hours in Let’s Go vs well over 100 in Sword. Completing the dex is also a much bigger achievement in Sword and Shield.

I'd go for Pokemon Sword/Shield as I really enjoyed Shield, admittedly the story is not as interesting as lot of the other games in the series but I still managed to get many hours out of the game (and really I mean many, many hours - my switch has it down as been played for 550 hours or more) and while its not my favourite Pokemon game I still thought that overall it was a pretty good game. I found it was quite nice having an aim (mine was to complete the pokedex - which honestly wasn't too difficult for me as my brother has Sword on his switch so it was easy getting the game exclusive Pokemon but many people also trade Pokemon to help complete their Pokedex) which could help make the game more interesting and make up for the weaker storyline, plus there is always shiny hunting which I spent many hours on. I know some people aren't fond of the Galar region in the game but I really loved exploring it and seeing the similarities between areas in the game and the places they were based off (I'm from the UK so I enjoyed seeing all the game versions of towns I'd visited in real life - except the fairy town, its beautiful but nowhere like anything here).

I do also have Pokemon Let's Go: Eevee and I wouldn't say its an awful game as I did have fun while I played it but I haven't actually finished the game, I probably will do at some point but I just don't have as much interest in it as it just seems to be a switch version of the original games without really adding anything new to them; nice game if you're bored and looking at trying something new but to me Sword/Shield are the better games for a first choice.

A lot of different opinions on sword and shield but I personally really enjoyed playing it. For me pokemon shield was the way to go, I got it with my switch bundle and haven't looked back since! Another fun one is pokemon mystery dungeon, which I just recently purchased for switch. I haven't played any of the previous ones so this will be my first introduction to the mystery dungeon series. Pokemon shield is a lot of fun though in my opinion, simple story, but otherwise good overall game. The battle grounds are fun and they usually always have something to do, and the array of pokemon you can catch from the new gens are exciting too despite Gen 1 and 2 being my favourite pokemon generations.

I think SW/SH will be better for you if you prefer the "regular" catching mechanic. Sw/Sh has the typical catch mechanics while Let's Go uses the Pokemon Go catch mechanic. The extra expansion pack for Sw/Sh adds a couple of hours into the play time if that matters to you!

Neither game is an excellent example of what Pokemon has to offer...but, I'd say that Sword and Shield are the obvious victor for the variation they offer. With 'Let's Go' you are honestly going to play those games once and be done with them. It's only the original 151 Pokemon, and a very bare-bones gameplay system. Don't get me wrong...I actually like 'Let's Go' quite a bit. (I'm even thinking about playing it again right now). But...I also have about 3 times longer playtime in Sword than I do in 'Let's Go'.
