Well, I bought the game yesterday and I love it! It's definitely one of the best Nintendo DS games but I'd only recommend it to people who enjoy puzzle games. I'm currently writing a review so I'll post it here later this week. =)
Do you recommend it to those looking for a Phoenix Wright-esque game?
Totally!

Why don't u just wait until Apollo comes out next week if that's the case?

Professor Layton and the Curious Village is one of the best Nintendo DS games so far. I don't think Apollo Justice is going to better.

I never said it would be a bad game. He's looking for a game that's like Phoenix Wright. You're not going to get any closer than a game from the same series.

He should get both.

Apollo will, naturally, own... but Professor Layton owns here, and now.

It's a lot like Phoenix Wright. It's got all the components except the court scenes, really -- you've got a murder case, eccentric and crazy characters, and a great atmosphere.

Granted, the core gameplay consists of puzzles, and that's not very Phoenix Wright-esque, but otherwise it'd just be a PW clone.

But the court scenes are my favorite part of PW! I only play the rest of it to get to those scenes.

They're my favorite part, too. But that's just the "gimmick" specific to Phoenix Wright, y'know? No other text games had court scenes, nor needed them. Professor Layton plays just fine without any court scenes.

It's KIND of like playing a cartoon. It's hard to describe.

Sweeeet, I just got it. Plays a lot like Phoenix Wright, and has the atmosphere of Majora's Mask, with music that reminds me of Partners in Time.

That's what I'd break it down to. I solved about 70 puzzles so far =D

I'm getting this today.

Sadly though, my stupid WiFi decided to just not-work all of the sudden, so I won't be able to get the weekly puzzles. D:
