I have been reading/watching videos about the new nintendo online subscription and the dlc. At first I wasn't gonna bother with the plus membership cause I don't really care about the retro games. But I realized if I buy the dlc alone and the regular membership(25 for dlc and 20 for memebership) it's only 5 bucks less than the plus membership that comes with the dlc. So I figured it would be worth $5 to check out the retro games and I'd go back to normal mebership the next time. Well I was just watching a youtube video and the guy pointed out that if you cancel the plus membership you lose the dlc! That is really crappy and unfair. I get losing the retro games but we paid for the dlc we shouldn't have to buy it again. So I will def only be buying the dlc and not getting the plus membership. Just wanted to share this for others that don't know.

That is correct. If you get the DLC through the online membership, you are essentially renting the DLC for however long you keep your subscription active. I did see this though, for more details of getting it through the online membership.

“Players can still continue to access certain things they have unlocked in Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Happy Home Paradise on their main island, including adding counters, partition walls, as well as adding ambient lighting and soundscapes, even if their access to Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Happy Home Paradise is suspended," a Nintendo spokesperson told me. "However, it will not be possible to visit the archipelago if players lose access to the DLC. To be able to visit the archipelago and take on requests of designing vacation homes again, you will need to purchase the DLC separately or renew the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership."

Source is here for the quote.

I feel like it's probably best for most people here, being big AC fans, to just buy the standalone DLC. The only reason getting access to the DLC the other way might make sense is if you wanted to play the N64/Genesis games anyway and you think you will not play ACNH longterm and don't care if you lose access to it when your subscription expires.

thanks for the heads up :) but im probably just going to buy the dlc and not upgrade the online membership.

The dlc is something we pay one time, or is it a yearly thing we have to pay?
Its only if you are getting the N64 and Sega Genesis games for the online expansion. As far as the AC DLC is its a one time pay if you were to buy it separately whereas if you choose to buy the online expansion it will come for free, but whats making it pretty controversial at the moment is the pricing. If you live the UK its not a big deal, but in the USA its pretty high. $50.00 per year.

If you are only able to use the new techniques in one house, it's not worth the extra $5, but it will also be a pain being able to learn all these techniques with multiple characters.

DLC for the online expansion isn't worth the price. I will only buy the AC DLC too.

Oh gotcha thanks for clarifying. I will only be buying the DLC. I’m not actually interested in the other games. I mostly just play animal crossing.

If I was already interested in getting the NSO expansion for the N64 games, is there any reason to also pay separately for the AC DLC? I’m not usually a fan of rentals/subscriptions if I have the choice to buy outright, but my thought process right now is that I should probably just upgrade my family plan subscription (I have about two years left after stocking up in a sale last year), and if NSO is going to lapse or take away the DLC perk, I should wait until then to buy the AC DLC. That way, at least it should effectively be cheaper than it is now thanks to inflation, assuming they don’t change the stand-alone price.

Will the NSO version require more annoyances to access, like regular online checks? And if so, how frequent are they likely to be?
