Question about characters

What does it mean when someone say they have a character in boxes ? Are they trading a character (selling) ?

When a villager is in boxes it means they're in their town, inside their house with all their furniture boxed up, ready to move out of town the next day. People advertise when a villager is in boxes because it's the only time they can have people come over, talk to the villager and invite them to their towns, essentially "adopting" them.
