So, I just started a new island on my old (crummy, but still useable for ACNH) Switch. I have one (digital) copy of the game linked to my Nintendo account, and one digital copy of the DLC. Obviously, this means I can't play both at the same time, and I've accepted that. (fortunately, I can use online features on my second island!)

Also, as I learned the other day, I can ONLY use one profile on my secondary Switch, the others have notes that they "don't own copies of the game", which is fair. My question is: if I bought a second copy of the game (physical), would I be able to make other characters? I'm going for a citycore theme, so I don't want it too empty, lol. Also, if I switched to a physical copy, would I still be able to keep my island? Would it recognize there was a copy plugged in, so I wouldn't have to keep relying on the digital copy?

And, from what I've heard, I still won't be able to connect the two games unless I have two copies of the DLC, which I'd be fine with. As long as I can use it online, that makes it less important that I be able to have my characters visit each other.

With a cartridge, you should be just fine to make as many characters as you want, keep the island, and be able to use both at the same time/visit each other! (granted, maybe not with the same Nintendo user account?)
The secondary Switch should prioritise reading the cartridge over accessing the digital copy. Especially when the Switch is registered as the 'secondary' on the eShop account; with secondaries requiring the Internet link and allowing only one user, etc.

And from my (minimal) experiences with owning one DLC between two Switches, you shouldn't need to buy two copies of the DLC? I've only got one account on my secondary Switch who can use the DLC but I've been interacting between the DLC-less and the DLC-enabled users just fine.
I should probably mention I'm using two cartridges, and have more than one Nintendo user account set up. I figured that the digital copy is more or less equal to a cartridge, in regards to multi-user access, on the 'primary' Switch, and have been running off of that assumption! 😅

Awesome, thanks 😁

And, from what I read elsewhere, you won't be able to communicate between the two games if you use the same DLC for both (but you totally can use it for both, I guess it just no longer registers as two "separate" games) But I could be wrong! Either way, that won't be a big deal~
