Question about villager clothing?

I heard rumor there was a way to remove certain items from their "wardrobe" so they won't wear them after the update. Is this true and does anyone know how?

Well I had "Jay" on my main island who just moved since my plot auto filled and he was from someone else's island. I saw him wearing a "Fossil" type hat (don't know what the name is) and what I did was I went to Isabelle and told her to get rid of the hat Jay was wearing. I also told her to change the way his home looks so that way he doesn't try to put on the clothes that he was given.

Since then I haven't seen Jay wearing that Fossil Hat on him. So maybe it has something to do with the fact if you have a villager who has a clothing item that was gifted to them, you can actually have it removed from Isabelle by talking to her and making sure that the home is reverted back to normal (unless if you have the DLC and completed most of it that this feature is unlocked) so it does work. Thats all I know so far.
