My mom and I live in an apartment in a small low rise building and have been there for almost 13 years. Our previous landlord was very good and responsive to emergencies. That all changed when he retired and sold the building to his brother, however.
I found out through my mom that our landlord actually told her to get rid of my cat (Cookie). We have had Cookie for 15 years, longer than this landlord has owned the building. He had contractors come into the apartment for whatever reason and she asked them not to let Cookie into her room. The landlord found out and said to her that she has to get rid of him and he will be billing her for damages caused by him.
The kicker is that the landlord's son lives below us (He evicted the woman who had been there over 12 years to move him in) and they have a cat. I bet he hasn't made threats about their cat.
Yesterday the landlord randomly shut the water off for two hours, with no notice or explanation. My mom had been doing the cooking and went to do the dishes, but realized she couldn't. She had also planned on having a shower, but again, no water.
He tried to raise the rent by slipping an agreement form under the door, which is not the proper way to do rent increases in Ontario. For how much he was trying to raise it, he needed to go through the landlord and tenant board. My mom spoke with a lawyer and the lawyer told her not to sign the agreement.
There's construction going on next door, and the landlord has been allowing the workers to block my mom's car in and only her car. Once she confronted one of the workers and said she needed to get her car and he said: "You need to wait!" She said she needed to get to work and he needed to move his truck. When she came home a few hours later, he said: "You must not be working very hard if you're already home." (She's a job coach, so she does some of her work from home. She mainly leaves so she can meet people she's going to coach and for work meetings. Oh, and for the gym.)
Once the landlord put some cinder blocks in her parking spot in a possible attempt to damage her car.
