So a Pokemon VGC is coming up on May 9th and I really want to participate in one. Info is here.

So the official format is going to be Double Battles. The only time that I have competed with other irl people was during a Pokemon tournament last year at a convention (Single Battles, no items & legendaries). And the only Double Battles I've played were within OR, but I feel that it's not gonna be very helpful. I managed to place third there, but I presume Double Battles are going to be extremely different.

From what I have gathered, these are the Pokemon that I'm thinking of using;
Nature: Bold
Ability: Super Luck
Item: Rocky Helmet
IVs: 31 / X / 31 / 31 / 31 / 31
EVs: 252 HP / 164 Def / 32 SpD / 60 Spe

Moves
Follow Me
Dazzling Gleam
Thunder Wave
Roost

Kinda borrowing Smogon's set, with Follow Me. Togekiss has decent Def/SpDef stats so I'm thinking that it'll be able to take them. Can anyone confirm the extent of Togekiss' bulkiness?
I decided on Rocky Helmet because Follow Me will direct attacks towards Togekiss, resulting in damage done to the Pokemon that have attacked. Yay or nay?
I could've used Air Slash + Serene Grace, but Dazzling Gleam hits both of the opponents...Two birds with one stone, maybe? And plus the chance of an increased Critical hit, too

Nature: Adamant
Ability: Gale Wings (Hidden Ability)
Item: Life Orb
IVs: 31 / 31 / 31 / X / 31 / 31
EVs: 80 HP / 252 Atk / 176 Spe

Moves
Tailwind
Roost
Flare Blitz
Brave Bird

Still debating whether I should include Tailwind or not. Will depend on which Pokemon I will be using and their Speed stat, too. Otherwise I'd probably switch to Protect
Roost allows Talonflame to become an annoying obstacle, and I'll be needing it anyways with Life Orb.
The other two are self explanatory. Strong moves with a bit of recoil but Roost will take care of it

Nature: Adamant
Ability: Sand Stream
Item: Tyranitarite???
IVs: 31 / 31 / 31 / X / 31 / 31
EVs: Yet to decide

Moves
Rock Slide
Earthquake
Protect
Crunch

Rock Slide and Earthquake which hits both foes. When I'm using Earthquake, I'll either switch in Togekiss or Talonflame as they are both immune to that attack
Crunch because I really have no idea what to put here

First off, I am guessing that Metagross will be overused. What with the Mega Evolution stats...
Nature: Adamant
Ability: Clear Body // Tough Claws
Item: Metagrossite???
IVs: 31 / 31 / 31 / X / 31 / 31
EVs: Yet to decide

Moves
Ice Punch
Hammer Arm
Meteor Mash
Earthquake

Moves have good coverage? I added in Earthquake in case I had to deal with a Metagross. That, and I can also safely have Togekiss/Talonflame as a teammate which are immune

I'm stuck between choosing Tyranitar or Metagross...I've got reasons for both but I'm still not completely sure who I should choose. Plus, only one of them can Mega Evolve...

And this is a list of Pokemon that I think I may use
- Garchomp: Has good stats, but I'm not sure at what opportunity I'll use it for
- Milotic: Access to Recover, and can fend off Grass moves with an Ice Beam
- Alakazam: Main reason is because of Knock Off
- Goodra: Good Sp. Def and Sp. Atk
- Rotom: Just putting it out there

Can anyone recommend/suggest any alterations or Pokemon for me? >_<
I know you can put 6 in the Battle Box, but you're only going to take in 4 for a battle. And I'll definitely need to make them know Protect, that's for sure

-Gastrodon
-Something with Surf
You win!

...I'm serious. Gastrodon can set up Stockpile, other Pok?mon can spam surf, and there's usually too much for the opponent to handle. "Attack the thing boosting the Gastrodon's Sp. Attack, or try to get as much damage possible onto Gaatrodon?
Gastrodon with 3 Stockpiles can only get OHKOed by:
-Primal Groudon with Solar Beam (Banned, so not a problem. Regular Groudonn probably OHKOs too.)
-Grass Type Judgment from Arceus (Also banned.)
-Critical hits (Bane of my existence.)
-Probably any other Grass type legendary.
-Probably any mega that's Grass Type.

Wait there's a new pokemon?
Didn't alpha sapphire and omega ruby just come out?
Pokemon is super addicting though! <3

I used to be huge on competitive battling on smogon, try out your team on pokemon showdowns vgc ladder and see how you do. Also i'm pretty sure even a defensive Togekiss runs serene grace air slash for a 60% chance to flinch, reason it got banned from UU a while back. It's worth it.

As far as synergy goes that team is very weak to Terrakion and Electric types. Water/ground type would be great, I recommend Swampert or Gastrodon. Swampert has overall better stats but Gastrodon has recovery.

Also zen headbutt over hammer arm for stab on metagross, plus it's tough claws boosted.

Anyway i'm pretty rusty and not too familiar with VGC but that's what I got for now. I'm not sure what mega t-tar creeps, but probably the speed creep + max HP and Attack.

Gastrodon seems interesting, but it also has a 4x weakness to Grass. I could also pick Swampert which has a higher attack, but also with a 4x weakness to Grass :/

I decided to get Togekiss with Serene Grace and Thunderwave + Air Slash makes it a huge threat to paraflinching the opponent.
So after consideration, my team will be this; Togekiss, Hydreigon, Metagross, Chesnaught, Swampert and Talonflame. I know 4 of them have a 4x weakness to a type, but I'm thinking of putting Wide Guard and Quick Guard on Swampert and Talonflame.

Grass type isn't too common, and it's predictable when your opponent does have it. And like I said, after it's set up, nothing can really kill it. Storm Drain + Surf is what builds its attack stat to pretty high levels.

Yeah and if you have strong Ice attacks/Pokemon they can easily be wiped out.

So you're participating in a real VGC tournament?

Then here are some tips for you:

Have a goal that your team is trying to accomplish. Is it hyperoffensive? Are you trying to win with speed and brute force? Is it a trick room team? Are you trying to take advantage of bulkier, slower sets to throw off your opponent? Is it a weather gimmick? Do you have reliable measures to keep up your weather condition?

Know what to look out for. Certain strategies are very easy to predict, such as Lieloom (Liepard Breloom lead, Lie Fakes out, Loom spores, Lie Encores, Loom spores, Lie usually switches, and Loom reacts according to predictions).

Common things to look out for are
Fake Outs (Liepard, Ludicolo, Sableye I think, Meowstic if you happen to see one)
Taunts (Thundurus, Sableye, Liepard, I know I'm missing a really big taunter but I can't remember any more)
Rain (Politoed, Klefki, Sableye, Thundurus)
Sun (YZard, Ninetales)
Follow me (Pachirisu, Clefable, Volcarona, Amoongus, Lucario can be in some situations)
T-Wave (About 50% of Pokemon, but mostly Thundurus, Togekiss, Clefable, most Pokemon with either great speed but low attack or great bulk)
W-o-W (Rotom-W, some Talonflames, other miscellaneous ghosts, sometimes bulk arcanine)
Encores (Liepard, that cotton thing)
Trick Room (M-Camerupt is a giveaway, Mawile, Reuniculus or whatever, Clefable can be a Trick Roomer, Cresselia, a generally slow team overall)

These are some common moves you'll see. If your team has an answer to all of these, you're going to be pretty set. As for common offensive threats....

Lando-T, ground flying, hits hard with earthquake and runs u-turn
M-Salamence, can run physical special or mixed fairly easily, but it's commonly physical now with double-edge
Hydreigon, still one of the fastest pokemon, runs choice specs/scarf usually (scarf more often), will use Dark Pulse 80% of the time
Talonflame, always will be great offense, can be taken out with a good switch prediction (usually runs life orb, so if you switch into a bulky poke, it'll be taking recoil from brave bird + life orb)

Some common supports...
Thundurus is highly popular, it has great utility in taunt, t-wave, and others as well has strong HP Ices and Thunderbolts
Pachi always makes a great Follow Me and learns Super Fang to tear through tanks, as well as nuzzle which breaks Focus Sash/ Sturdy and paralyzes 100%

I'll finish this later
