Are they supposed to be really rare? I saw on a companion app that it's rarity is 2 outta 5 stars, so I should be seeing it regularly, but I can't seem to find one. It never spawns, even though it's supposed to be available all day long.

Is there any kind of trick to make them spawn?

Southern hemisphere? Go to a NMT island and terraform it to only leave the trees. Get rid of the flowers and stuff that will draw the other insects. This will still take a lot of time. I had to do this a few times until I found a shell. I doubt I will bother trying to get their model. It was too much effort for one for the museum.

Damn, I was hoping this wouldn't be necessary :/

Yeah, the cicada/bettle season has just started here in the southern hemisphere, and I already got all the other cicadas available, I'm just missing the shell and some beetles, the napoleon fish and a couple deep sea creatures to complete everything.

Thanks for the advice! Time to "repurpose" a neighbouring island for "science" lol

I dont know if i will ever get the bug model but if i ever do i am aware its gonna be tons of work and patience

cicada shells were one of the bugs that I had to give up on 'actively' finding because it literally never showed up when I was looking for it, and then as soon as I stopped hunting for it I found it! which I realise isn't exactly great advice haha, good luck finding it though!

Yeah cicada shells are stupid rare now. Like, extremely rare. In all of the summer months I found MAYBE 2. I know I atleast found 1 cause I have it donated.

I know they used to be much more common in NL, and for how common cicadas are in NH, you'd think you would find more shells just lying around. I don't really understand why the change in rarity, unless they are rare to find irl, which I kinda doubt.

I also had to clear the island to make the darn thing spawn. What a pain! I've never seen it spawn on my own island.

You'd probably have to destroy anything and everything that would spawn other insects for there to be a chance. And I invested too much time on my island to do that lol.

You can't use the designer app on a crook mile isle.

I didn't have any trouble finding a cicada shell last time I played summer, so I must have been lucky too. However, there are other tree bugs I never even saw. A couple of the stags. It was dark and I probably scared them off before I even got a good look at them. I wish there weren't so many similar-to-each-other tree bugs in summer. I would rather have more butterfly species.

Cicada shells were also super hard for me to find. I found about 1 during the whole summer. I think this and the stick bug are the most frustrating bugs to find.

I never even found one during summer in the northern hemisphere. I searched so many times, so I guess I'll do what the others in this thread have suggested and go to a nook mile island. It's frustrating that it seems to be the rarest bug in the game, at least in my experience. I saw everything else at least once, whether or not I was able to catch it, except the cicada shell.
