Problem: quite a few people now have stated that they've had their towns invaded by lurking non-members here after they posted their Dodo codes publicly (e.g. this thread)

Why the current solution doesn't fully work: not everyone knows that there are lurkers who can invade until it's too late. Also, it can be cumbersome to PM each person individually with the Dodo code and adds a lot more work for the host

Possible solution: some other sites like Resetera have implemented a bbcode tag "hide". When you put [hide] [/hide] around text, it's only viewable to people who have replied to the thread. Everyone else sees the message: "You need to reply to this thread in order to see this content." That means that lurkers cannot see the content. Just like this:

This would allow people to post Dodo codes to the forums without worrying about being invaded by those who have zero accountability. True, it's not hard to make an account, but it means that you know it was one of the people who replied to your thread who came to your town. That added layer of accountability is enough to stop bad actors who are just looking for an easy target.

this is a great idea !!! it would definitely give a lot of peace of mind to posting your Dodo code publicly. i haven't heard about any scammers or randos appearing in trading towns yet but i'm sure its bound to happen if no preventative measures are in place.

i'm definitely not opposed to this in any sense but considering it doesn't stop others who replied to join uninvited i'd still say you should keep dodo codes to pms

i also fail to see how it's cumbersome, you just hover (desktop) or click (mobile) a user's name or avatar and hit "start conversation"

If you have a town with high turnip prices, you'll have people constantly asking for entry. Even if you PM them in batches, that's a lot more management work, having to keep track of people and PM them all when you could have many dozens of people interested in selling in your town.

It's extra cumbersome if you actually have to do stuff when people visit you, like lead them or make things for them, because it means you have to put down the game to manage your replies and PMs. Meanwhile, people are waiting in your town as you afk.

It's true people can still join 'uninvited' as long as they reply to the thread, but if someone is just asking for tips for entry then they're not policing which members can join. If you want to do a specific trade, then absolutely as you say, PMs are the way to go.
