The Direct wasn't too specific, but according to a Spanish language AC video, you can pay 100 Nook Miles to be taken home, to the plaza, the store, or Dodo Airlines.

Seems more like a fast travel service than an SOS type of thing.

I guess the way I see it, if Nintendo felt this was needed, then at some point the scale of our Island will feel so large that it'll be a convenience to dial up Resetti for a lift somewhere else.

That makes more sense to me, because I doubt you’d get lost or stranded. I hope Resetti has been given more importance than what was shown on the direct, because just hearing his voice and music, plus a black screen doesn’t satisfy my need to see him (and be yelled at by him!) But maybe not and that’s okay.

Maybe it’s necessary. I can see myself dropping the vaulting pole/ ladders , etc all around my island to make room for pocket space (I did this in new leaf). What if I decide to start terra building my island and somehow trap myself in some obscure part of the island ( or trap myself inside a smaller island inside my island) and I can’t get out because I had out tossed my tools? I guess then I would need to be rescued.

I don't think I'll use this option very much. I will probably completely avoid it at the beginning, when there's still stuff to save up for and buy with Nook Miles. But I can see it being useful during certain circumstances. For example, maybe a shop is about to close and maybe the rescue service could get you there faster than walking since it's on the other side of the map.

I've definitely had some nighttime beetle/shark on the island farming issues in NL where I'd get back to the mainland with only a minute or so until Re-Tail closed and not being able to get there in time.
